It is hard to tell from a picture, but I'd say it needs to be turned.

Yup, I'm with Jim. Have someone smack a few thousandths off of it, or until it cleans the pits up. They're really easy to chuck up and it's an easy job.

I've been known to use drums that no self-respecting T20 guy would (for my own machines) but I wouldn't chance that one without a good clean-up on a lathe. That one might be a little grabby as it is, and would wear your band lining pretty quick.

ok I will head out in the morning to have it milled down and will post results of it tomorrow. If they have to take to much off will order a new one. Was really hoping to try this thing out. But would rather be safe then sorry later. Thanks guys for the advice.

If there were just a few very minor pits that you couldn't really feel if you ran your finger over the drum that could have been mostly removed with some sandpaper, then I'd say you're OK, but these look deep and look like they'd catch on the band material and eat it away. A very little bit of time on a lathe and they'll be fine.

I've seen a number of drums that have small brown spots on them. Kindof look like the rust is just starting, but they could also be imperfections in the casting. If you run a fingernail across them they are perfectly smooth.
I thought that was what you were describing at first, but not what I see in the picture.

Thanks! Fixing to start putting it together now. Got laptop out and setting it up for the video. The guy that did it was awesome! He wouldn't even charge me for it. said if we ever need anything turned down he will charge around 25 dollars and the shipping cost. He stopped what he was doing to do it too. He said it is just a hobby now he has done it all his life. So if anyone needs milling done i can get u in touch with him. Hope some of u around around while i am tackling this thing lol.

I haven't had a chance to run any of the drums I've turned down, but after taking a few thousandths off, I keep the drum in the chuck and run some emery cloth over it while it's spinning to smooth out anything rough that any tooling may have left (I'm using old tooling, and a considerably older lathe....) I don't want a glossy finish, but want to make sure that it's smooth enough that it won't wear a band prematurely. It's tough to gauge what yours look like not having it in-hand.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I'm a hack, and I'm happy with the job I was able to do in about 10 minutes for a couple drums that'd seen better days.

ok update......i got it installed everything seems to be working good. Not turning well in reverse. gonna let things cool down a bit then go out and check some adjustments..what would a good air pressure be? i can tell there is way to much in them. But performance is awesome so far.

Hello all i am having trouble getting the adjustment right on my T-20. it just not wanting to turn right or left in either way. Will turn better in forward than reverse. what would the starting adjustment need to be? Measurement wise?

The band adjustment procedures can be found in the how-to section under the T20 rebuild article or in the manuals section under the T20 manual.
