I recently picked up a hustler that was coverted to hydraulic drive.All new chains, idlers,bearings and so on.Body is a little ruff but savable.I always wanted to try this but the price detoured me. The work is all but done.It is seriously under powered but could be geared down to operate.Curious on speed after doing this.It has a good running kohler 14hp but I figure it needs at least a 22hp or better.Someone spent alot on it to get it where its at.The pump,lines ,and drive motors all seem new.controls are smooth but it will kill the motor with current power and gearing.My last 6x6 was a max II with a kawasaki 440 two stroke.I want another two stroke machine.I will work the bugs out on this one and finally see if it will be as smooth as I hoped.Might make a good snow pusher.I'll try to post a few pics.

I think I remember seeing this one on Craigslist not too long ago. Hydraulic drive robs quite a bit of power, so you're probably right, a higher horsepower 4 stroke would work best for you. A 23HP Briggs Vanguard would probably do the trick. You might want to talk to 6X6World member Jerseybigfoot. He's quite the expert when it comes to hydraulic drive systems."Looks like you have a problem with your 4 wheeler........you're missin' two wheels there"

Remember hydro drives typically want to be run at WOT. So you just start it up and run it against the gov and meter the fluid to the motors for speed. I would recommend the Kohler 29HP EFI. Plenty of power and lower fuel consumption. You will find it used in many of the bigger zero turn mowers that run gasoline engines.

Cvt is a good idea use a belt instead of chain as chains driven at 3000 rpm become shrapnel when they fail. This will give lower end torq but wont help on top speed. I agree you should start at 30 hp for a new motor. Most hyd. sys will be 3.5 to 4 times the gals of the pump output if your pump puts out 10 gals per min. you need a 35 to 40 gal hyd tank to stay cool if not then a cooler is needed. Also make sure you dont exceed the max rpm of the pump when using the CVT. If you want more torq but less top end with what you've got just change the sprocket ratios bigger on the pump or smaller on the engine.
