  • Drive chain adjustment?

Can anyone post the procedure for drive chain adjustment on a mid 80's Hustler 950 with a 18HP twin cyl Briggs? I have a loose chain on the driver side rear that is rubbing the frame, and I really don't have any idea how to tighten it.
I don't know if the floorboards have to come out or not, and no idea how the tensioner is supposed to work. Kinda difficult to see down in there.
I'm sure I can figure it out, but if anyone can post some pointers it will save me some time.
I've searched the tech section and the how-to area.
Still lookin for a repair manual for this Hustler if anyone can help me out. Thanks for any insights into this.

    Here's the Hustler manual....

As far as the drive chain adjustment, I think your 950 has the unistrut-style chain adjusters. On my 980, it's a 3/4" head bolt that you loosen up, then pull up on the adjuster, and snug the bolt back down. You can either jack the machine up and adjust it, or just lift the machine up and spin the back tire backwards (just that one tire...) to move all the chain slack to the bottom, where the adjuster will take it up. It's a cinch on the tall-tub 980s; I can just put my back under the bumper and lift the back end up to spin the tire.

If you have the original rear floor board, it'll have to come out to access it. Double check your front adjusters while you're at it. The original adjusters have a tendency to bend and throw the idler off at an angle.

Thanks Mike. I tore into it yesterday. Not as intimidating as it looks, just a pain to get to. Front chain adjusters are OK. Middle and rear adjusters are all the way out and I still have loose chains. Took a link out of each chain, and now they seem to be too short. Even with the adjusters removed. Never dreamed one link would make that much difference. Went up and got some half links yesterday, Gonna put them in today.
I did notice that the manual specifically says to NOT use half links though. Why is that?

Also noticed that the rear sprocket sleeves are sloppy on the axles. It appears that the hole in the axle where the bolt goes through has become sloppy. The bolts/nuts are tight on the sleeves, but I still have 1/4" forward/backward slop. All the others are tight. Can I drill the holes oversize and use bigger bolts? I'm sure the axles are hardened, don't know if they'll drill or not.
What are my other options? Where can I get replacement axles?
