  • Hustler---Briggs vs Kohler question

I picked up another Hustler 950 the other day and I was going to use the good rear engine cover off of it on my other 950. The newest one has a Kohler single cyl, and my other 950 has a Briggs 18 H.P. twin cyl.
The problem I've encounterd is that the Briggs sits up about 4 inches higher than the Kohler. It's mounted on approx 4" uprights that are welded to the frame, which puts the top of the air cleaner higher than the top of the hood area. I know this isn't the original Briggs motor in Hustler 1.
My question is has a previous owner raised the motor mounting for some reason or is there more than one mount height for these machines?

The Briggs 18HP I/C flat twin was a factory Hustler motor used in the last run of late model 950 and 980 machines. If you found the correct motor mount plate for the Briggs, it would simply bolt in. Or you could get rid of the 4" uprights that someone made and fab your own correct motor mount so that it would fit based on the factory Briggs motor mount dimensions. I'm sure there's a Hustler owner out there that could provide the measurements for you.
