    need advice

    Im new here and have always wanted a hustler since I was a kid. I am now 47. I saw 1 yesterday for sale on the net. The guy wants $500 for it. Hasn't got back with me on the model yet, but said it has a 20 horse briggs, all sprockets and gears look good and runs good, but bendix wont engage. He said you could pull start it. Seeing as I know nothing about these units and have never even ridden in one I thought I would seek the advice of the experts, folks that own them and have made repairs and mods to them. What do I need to watch out for when buying one? Here are a couple of pics that he has posted. Tell me what you can form them. I know you cant see it all, but can see more than I can.

    Hello and welcome to the site. Seeing as no one who actually has a hustler has responded I will give you my little bit of input. To me this looks like member JPswifts hustler 980 model (I believe). With the right setup these things are unstoppable. Especially If this thing runs and drives it seems like a good price. By the looks of it it is not in terrible shape but thats just my opinion from seeing other peoples hustlers. Like I said hopefully JPswift will chime in for you as he knows everything about these machines. Good luck to you and if you end up not getting this machine let me know and I will haha

      I have 2 950's and that one definitely looks like a 980 to me (im no expert though), but for 500 even if needed a little work I would definitely be adding that to my collection.

        Thats why I said if he doesn't want it let me know lol.... But come JP help this guy out. I think it is a 980. Not a deep tub 980 though

          Looks like a 980 tall tub to me. $500.00 is a good deal I would think. What is that sticking out off the back rack?

            It's absolutely a deep tub. It's a good deal for $500 even if the transmission is completely absent. Expect the transmission mount to be hammered, the sprocket tubes to need a little work and the frame to have a lot of small cracks on the side rails. Most 980 owners have encountered this and the upgrades and repairs aren't all that difficult.

            Send me the seller's info and I'll go inspect it for you ASAP.

              I have no idea what that is sticking out the back. He said it runs and drives just fine. I havnt been to look at it yet its about 4 hours from my house. Is the 980 the big foot. I read a lot about them on here last night, but cant remember all that I read. Thanks a lot for the replies

                See there you go. You just had to wait for more of the experts to chime in to let you know more exact details. So as everyone has said, even if it needs work it is well worth it.

                And Hydromike I already called dibs on it if he doesnt want it haha... And wait don't you already have one? lol

                  I waited to long. It was in Arkansas and a guy from NY bought it just a little bit ago. Darn the bad luck

                    Sorry to hear you missed it and yes the 980 is the Big foot you have read about. People refer to it as such because it is equipped with the larger Goodyear 26" tires from the factory. I think they are pretty cool. Here is a picture of a couple at Ashtabula this year.

                            Ya sure it wasn't you lol.... And I guess you have a point Mike. I could use a few more for everyday of the week haha... But none the less someone got a really good deal on a nice machine. We will find out who it was soon enough. Probably was Jp lol... He always finds best deals first

                              What is the most economical way to get these things home if you find one a long way from home. Other than jump in the truck and go. Seems like NY to Arkansas is quite a hop with gas prices being what they are. If I can find one quite a ways off and still get it home for a descent price that would be great
