Hustler 2 Cyl. 2 Cycle Engine

It's getting to the end of the Hibernation season here in N.E. Ohio (at least for me, anyhow). I'm entertaining thoughts about possibly refreshing and reusing this engine. I think it's original equipment for the Hustler 880. I see they came with a Kohler 309CC but that was a single cyl. Just starting to get my ducks in a row and feeling around for some info. Anybody recognize this engine?

I keep looking at this thinking CCW 340, I see the engine has a tag, last letter should give you a clue. there is probably another tag elsewhere on the engine also as that is the Hustler model and serial numbers.

Thanks men. Jim, I think your correct. I believe it is a CCW. Not a big issue now, just figured someone may have remembered what engines came in the 880's. I searched without success and the unit in the pic is at Mom's place now. I was just trying to get a little more motivated to do something once it starts warming up, lol. Figure it's going to need all gaskets and seals replaced, minimum and was curious about availability and $$.

tag is next to cooling fan. the cc will be stamped, post the serial number as there is a few variants of the same displacement. I have a set of engine manuals. the big issue with the old engines is the ignition points cams rust and wear out the follower on the points.

Thanks Marc! I may get to it next Tuesday, may even get to pull it. Jim sent me some very helpful info. Still a fuzz confused about some things. The manual shows 4 crank seals, 2 of one type and 2 of another. The kits I'm finding online appear to contain only 3 seals Also was wondering if you (or anyone else) knows the #'s for the Crank Bearings. I'm thinking we can source these locally if needed?

Just answered one of my questions. Was wondering what we do when we find out that the bearings and seals on the crankshaft, in between the rod journals,are shot.

" 4.8 CRANKSHAFT (See Figure 4-7) NOTE: If inspection reveals maintenance requirements beyond the outer ball bearing or outer oil seal removal and installation, install a new crankshaft. "

Gotta hunch I'll be looking for a small 2 cyl 2 cycle engine soon!! lol!!!

It seems quite a few members are operating CCW 340 and 400(?) engines to this day. I'm concerned about the condition of the inner seals and bearings on my "prospect" 340. I have zero experience with 2 cycle twins, I've only had single cyl 125's & 250's in my days. Was just wondering what is the result of trying to run the engine with "compromised" inner seals will be. No top end is not a big issue however, not idling is NOT acceptable. I plan on getting the engine on the workbench in the next few weeks or so. This build will most likely not begin til mid to late summer. I'm looking fwd to gathering as much info as I can in June at Pine Lake. So, (particularly the New Jersey camp) if ya see me heading toward your camp with a cooler in my hand, be prepared to drink my beer and bend my ear.
