  • Keyed axles

Contemplating axle options for a Hustler build. Have saw a couple of builds that used 1.25 inch keyed axles, Meinfield's comes to mind. Did not see how the wheel hubs were installed. I suppose they probably welded them on, but am wondering if a keyed wheel hub would work since I currently lack a welder?

lug .. i have 1 1/2 '' axles keyed with keyed hubs on my max 2 . they have had no problems for 2 years . but on my design , i welded the original 1 1/4 '' hub to a 1 1/2 '' keyed shaft coupler. i also put a 1 1/2'' split collar on the axle next to the coupler and welded one half of the collar to the hub , then clamped it down on the axle for some extra '' grip ''. if you have a 1 1/2 '' keyed hub on a keyed axle it should work . if the hub only attaches to the axle with a key and a allen set screw , you may need to drill a hole thru the hub and axle for a tight connection. hope this helps , johnboy va.

      John,
Just found your build pics for the high boy Max and now know how you are able to run 1.5 axles. How has that set up worked out for you? I am in Alaska and would be using mine in some pretty rough country with marshy areas and stream crossings. After looking at your pictures I had visions of making a 8x8 subframe. Might have to do some photochopping once the snow and mud in the backyard goes away.

lug...i've run this machine over 2 years with the subframe design and for me it works great . easier to work on the chains and bearings , etc. than down in the tub. easy to keep them clean , oiled and greased . same bearings for all this time . i run # 60 chains with adjustable bearing mounts which eliminates the tensioners. it has added overall weight , but with the 23 h.p. briggs there is plenty of power . i have pretty much worked out every design challenges so if anyone builds one i can give some pointers . the few videos of the build show the basic fabrication procedures. keep in touch.....johnboy va.

          Johnboy va,
I found your videos of the Mk. II rebuild of you Max. That turned out nice. Are you still running without any chain covers?
