  • ho - hum performance

Hey guys, let me apologize in advance for this long post, I recently put a red spring on my 950, so you can all imagine that after hearing all of the hullaballoo about them, I was expecting to be wowed on my first test drive. I wasn't. So then while resealing my bearings I changed to 40 tooth main drives and went for a test ride expecting to be even more wowed this time. I wasn't again. I recently put on a set of 25" Mudbugs also. I have read all those "I had to let off, I thought it was gonna come over" stories. So now I am wondering why is my machine's performance still so HO-HUM? -read on

I had also recently noticed that my throttle lever would move a good bit before the revs would come up (slack). While investigating the possibility of adjusting the cable, I discovered that it was frayed just inside the sleeve. That discovery was made late last Sunday evening, so I planned on fixing it Monday evening after work, and a trip to buy my sons some new camo for turkey season.

We get to the store, I get out of the wife's car, and for reasons unknown to me, I didn't move my hand. So when my son closed his door, the ring finger of my left hand was caught between the rear edge of the front door and the front edge of the rear door. Which combined with the slamming action of the rear door acted as a giant bolt cutter and all but cut the end of said ring finger off just past the last knuckle. 3 stitches WITHOUT DEADENER, busted/split nail, open fracture 2 x-rays, trip to the orthopedic surgeon, no surgery, and 1 week off work-DANG!!! Oh yeah, did I mention that OF COURSE the door was locked AND the keys were in the wifes purse!!! So about a minute later I get to take my finger out from between the doors. So now I'm working with a bum finger! I HATE MONDAYS!

So yesterday I managed to get the new throttle cable on and adjusted properly and then I got the WOW effect. The old cable having too much slack wouldn't open the carb enough to build the needed rpms to get peak performance out of my machine. Talk about night and day, all the upgrades I had done were just added parts until I got that Briggs to wake up. And yes I now have some of those "I had to let off" stories.

Again apologies for the long post

Ouch, and congratulations If you didn't do nerve damage it might be just a memory someday. If it makes you feel any better, decades ago I was working on my harley's electric starter.. had the primary cover off, and pushed on the starter drive gear. That engaged the solonoid contacts, activated the starter and pulled my finger through between the drive and ring gear. I still have the gear tooth pattern on my fingertip where it was ripped open and then sewn up.

That must have been an eternity, having your finger in a locked door All the new found power in the honda must be nice, though!

Sorry to hear about your finger....and I sympathize! Maybe your signature could be.."Car doors should have warning labels"??? Seriously, take care and keep that wound clean!

I did not know/remember you went to the 40 tooth?? For me, that was the best mod I have done, hands down! Just out of curiosity...what is your top speed now??

For me, the red clutch spring was a little more subtle than the 40 tooth sprocket.

As far as motor, next on the list for me is a tach and hour-meter....I want to see what RPM I am hitting at WOT. Also found a motorcycle muffler I am going to put on the Honda

Thanks guys, I thought that I was gonna be one of those people who can't tell you where to put your hands. ya' know NEVER LET A MAN WITH NO FINGERS TELL YOU...

The cable being out of adjustment didn't allow the butterfly in the carb to travel through it's full range so the rpms on the Briggs would never reach the higher end. This greatly limited the Hustler's performance. This was not very noticeable with the 22" Rawhides, but I knew something was up when after the red spring AND the 40 tooth (traded from Mudbug for work on his max) my machine would lug and not spin the tires while climbing a small, steep bank.

After the new adjustment I thought that would be a true test so I jumped in and took off. The difference was not only noticeable but absolutely amazing, I gassed it and the thing took off like a bullet! Wow! It ain't never done that before! So when I got to the same slough bank, it's about 3' high and nearly vertical, I eased up to it as always and hit the throttle. We went up so quick that I was looking up at the tree before I could even think about letting off. So I backed off the throttle expecting the Hustler to roll back down but to my amazement it only set the front end down and we drove on over.

        I LIKE IT!!!

Better stock up on skeeter spray, it's looking like it's gonna be a good year for 'em.

I know they work while sitting still but what about while riding? These skeeters will chase you down, I mean you can SEE 'em chasing you. Seems they got worse the last few years, a lasting present, compliments of Rita and Ike, I guess.
