Does a Hustler perform better than a Max IV?

The problem that you,ll have in putting large tires on a Hustler 980 Bigfoot, is the distance between the middle and rear tire. The Max IV also has this very same problem too. I assume this is for weight distribution in the water when carrying a passenger in the rear seat? Since the engine is mounted in the rear of both the Hustler 980 ,and and also Max IV,, this would make sense.

The space between the middle and front tire on both machines is farther apart though. Depending on the tire size, because each brand of tire varies in diameter, a 26 inch tire will probably be the largest that you can use. I have 26 inch , Bearclaws on one Hustler Bigfoot , 26 inch, ASX,s on another one, and 26 inch , Gator,s on my third bigfoot. In my opinion ,a 26 inch tire on a Hustler Bigfoot is the best size to use for mud clearance and water speed.

i feel the hustler is easy to work on i can and have pulled the engine and tranny and put it back to gether in less than 3 hrs replacing a axel. i have not worked on a max so i have no comproson but i feel that every thing on the hustler is self explanatory and easy to work on.

I've had a couple Max IV's in the past, but I was wondering if a Hustler outperforms a Max IV in mud, water, land, handling, etc. I know the Hustler 980 Bigfoot is more comparable, but either a 950/980 comparison to a Max IV is fine. I tried searching and couldn't find anything.

Are you kidding me. Why would you even consider a Max compared to a Hustler? I had a hustler when I lived in Oregon with a 440 chaparall engine and it was set up for racing. Now I have another one I am working on every day for an hour or so. Just looking at a Max tells you all that. I have looked at most or the six wheelers and Hustler has always been on top as far as I am concerned. With a Rotax 503, fifty horse power engine you can make a Hustler chase rabbits. I have never found a website that shows just what a Hustler can really do. I know there must be plenty of people who know but I just can't find a movie showing it's true capability. There is a lot to know about any 6x6 and they can be very dangerous, so be careful. Seat belts, helmet, and insurance should take priority in readiness of your outside adventures. I love my little hustler. I will place some pictures when I get more time. And, thank you for you true and honest opinion and comparison of these wonderful toys. best regards, geo

You can get high quality bearings for the Hustler from Buffalo Bearing for about the same or less than the cost of Max IV bearings. Avoid Route6x6 when it comes to buying any parts. He charges insane prices and a lot of the stuff he sells is not very high quality.....

Tell me bout it! I'm finding that out the hard way...That man has gotten DEEP into my wallet!

I have never owned a max, but there are some things I really like about the Hustler 980's now that I have built a couple of them:

The frames are STRONG. Hustler built very robust frames, that are strengthened in the places that see the most stress.

On the deep body tub, there is a lot of room in the engine bay for many different engines, upgrades, custom exhausts, etc. It will also float 3-250lb+ guys and hunting gear across the pond safely, and as long as the wheels are turning they are pretty stable. They really displace a lot of water, and it is amazing how high they float compared to other 6x6's I have seen.

I can run large tires (currently 25" ASX's that are 13" wide)

They are very stable, even at high speeds. My 980 Deep tub will reach speeds of 50mph (stupid, I know) and up to about 40 it is pretty stable. After that the t-20 gets a little tricky to steer.

50mph!?!!? (Please tell me you were wearing a helmet & seat belt!) Now then... was that kind of speed achieved flying solo or fully loaded with yourself and 3 other people?? Don't be a tease; you HAVE to get a high speed pass on video for us to watch! LOL!
