  • Clunk from Hustler drive

I recently got my Hustler Engine to run. When I try to run the machine, some time a big clunk sound comes from the transmission area, Does this mean the tranmission T20 is trouble or maybe just the chain? I check the oil and it is to the bottom nut. clean lokking tranmission oil.

    Thank you for any help

    clunks

I have a Hustler 950, and it will clunk when the chains get loose. The t-20 really should never make a clunking noise unless there is a broken internal part. Tighten your chains, this should take care of it. If you replace them, spend the money to get good ones, I made the mistake of buying cheap chains, now I have to tighten them all the time. They are #50 chain on most Hustlers, in case you are looking to get new ones. Hope this helps. Mike
I don't want to go fast, I just want to go anywhere.

You might want to check your transmission mounting bolts to see if they are tight.I have had them work loose before and cause slack in the chains.

The chain on my Hustler is very loose. the tensioner does not touch the chain. There is only one adjustment on each side right? it is at output of the transmission, the plastic roller on top of the chain goes in between two verticle posts? and how tight it should be? I hopy it the chains and not the Tran.

        Thank you

My hustler has sprocket adjusters on the chain coming off the transmission and round plastic adjusters on the rear axel chain. On the rear axel chain adjuster it should be on the bottom off the chain. On your trans chains if it has plastic roller adjusters then some one has changed them from the original sprocket type adjusters.I adjust mine to where there is a very small amount off slack in the chain,You don't want them real tight,That can cause a chain to break. If your chains are as loose as you are saying then that is more than likely your problem.I check the chains and chain lube after every ride.

I adjusted all the plastic rollers on the machine but the one driving the rear wheel on the transmision belt side still very loose with the adjust all the way up. Can I take out one link of the chain?
Anyway, the clunk went away after I adjusted the transmision tentioner. Thank you very much. I thought it came from the Trans.

Next problem I have is the drive belt is too loose, under load with lower engine speed, the belt stops and slips on the engine side.

If your adjuster is bottomed out then the chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. Not recommended to take a link out,You can get chain at a bearing Co.For the belt,I have been through hell with my belt.I bought a salsbury 704084,Which is the original belt for my hustler,Put the belt on and it will barely pull off.Too long,I have a950 with the 18 hp briggs.I don't have room to move my motor back.I will probably slide the motor forward and try to get a shorter belt.Wich motor do you have.

I think i may be having the same problem. Are the clunking and banging sounds because the chains basically lay in there anyway and with the extra slack they slap the frame so to speak? I tried to tighten the primary chain on right side from trans to center axle and i think it broke the adjuster where the bolt goes throught the flat steel plate i think the welds are weak. Thinking i need to get new chain how many feet for all?
