  • DMV woes

Hey guys, been awhile. Lookin for sugestions. Trying to "make legal" my 945-hk, problem is there seems to be no VIN or serial left anywhere on it and since pops passed away there's nobody to verify to the DMV and no record can be found of it being registered... anyone out there ever tackle this little problem? If so please help! They told me to take it to highway patrol to be verified, but there's no number to verify....now what?

If all else fails, give them the serial number from the engine, or see if the troopers can "Issue" a vin/serial number. I know that when you build a trailer you have to and can get a vin number issued. I thought it was through the state patrol. (Of course they will have to safety inspect it)
It's all just nuts and bolts.

Your right, out here CHP is the state patrol. I talked to the local "fuzz" and they said pretty much the same thing, but added that using the engine # isn't really an opition because I could change it. I'm going to put it on a trailer and take it down there.

If you cant find a VIN or serial number on the frame then they will most likely have you stamp the new one on it somewhere.

All that said, you have your avenues. Once you get the VIN issued, you can either make your own data plate and rivit it to the hull or burn it in the material. Key factor is that you got yourself a number and then you can go ahead and register it legally. (Remember to keep copies of all documents incase you need them later or sell it)Congrats on your accomplishment! Have fun.

OK, back on topic, Here are my experience with no numbers.
First ones are boats. I went an applied for a home made boat title and they gave me numbers I was suppose to put on them. These where little row boats that I didnt make but went that route to get numbers. (I have a video "row boat climb" on my you tube, lol. Same boat.) I have done that twice. Not sure if you can do that or not on a atv.
My other experience I just made up my own numbers on my 208tt. They will never know unless they read this thread.

That's kinda the route I wanted to take, just didn't want to verbalize it.... Thing is I need somethin sorta official sounding, incase Dmv decides to do the homework for once. I guess I need to find a # from a same model year that's "off the books". That or you know, go to CHP, try to convince them to make a new number even though I can't find anything for them to verify and the man I got it from is worm food(love ya pop).....ugh!

You could try stamping a number on the frame, take a picture and hit it with a crayon and paper. When I registered my last Attex, they were satisfied with just a picture of the VIN on the frame. My experience is that half the battle is getting somebody who's cool on the other side of the counter.

That would probably be a first for them. I doubt they have "The Books" or so many people wouldn't be coming to this sight for that same information. (Which is a good thing for the club.) DMV is set up more for processing "Street Legal" motorized vehicles, and "Off-Road" equipment is more of a lesser importance in the matter of highway safety process. (Although safety always IS important whatever the type vehicle.) And as george put it, it's a matter of having someone cool on the other side of the counter. When I returned from overseas and tried to register a Chevelle that I bought over there I got a run-a-round for two years. I had no title, but I did have valid registration from the military. I was given all kinds of hoops to jump through and all sorts of "File for lost title", safety, state patrol inspection, blah, blah, blah proceedures. One day I got a wild hair (you-know-where) and decided to give it another shot. Lady behind the counter got confused when I showed her my paperwork and called the supervisor. Supervisor looked the papers over, opened some book, QUOTED that my military paperwork was recognized/accepted as title, and 20 minutes later, I walked out with a valid title in hand.

I've been in simlliar situations with DMV, it never ceases to amaze me just how they are. If it was a business, they would've shut their doors or fired everyone a long time ago...
