  • Hustler bumper project

I like steel. I like the whole concept of taking big chunks of metal and bending, cutting, welding, and painting them into a final form that I can bolt to something else and then "run into stuff" without fear of damaging that "something else".

I've been working on the 980 for a couple months now, and although I would have LOVED to have called it done a long time ago, I can't bring myself to stay out of the garage, and away from the small pile of seemingly useless steel that has yet to be formed into something beneficial to the Hustler cause. Through the power of electricity, pickled hard boiled eggs and a few dozen IPAs, I'm just about able to call the bumper project on the 980 *done*.

I've posted a few pictures as I've made clumsy steps toward an undetermined goal of what the bumpers on this thing should look like. I like the utilitarian concept of a simple tube bolted to the front of the machine, so I wanted to keep that look, but modify it a bit. When I got the machine, i was diappointed that I only needed to put little effort into deflecting the bumpers by picking up the machine by hand, or putting a little weight on it. The stock Hustler front and rear brush guards (at least on my machine) are held to the body with about 1/8" thick, 4"x3.5" plates. The HDPE doesn't really seem incredibly strong in this area, and I think with a little too much force, it could possibly pull that plate right through the plastic. (I think Racerone3 had to fix this on his machine).

So, most of you following this machine's progress here have probably already seen a couple pictures of the front winch bumper, and the rear bumper, which I tied into the trailer hitch for a bit more support. Throughout all this effort, I was fooling myself that I wouldn't progress to another level of ridiculousness and simply tie the bumpers together.

So? I did it. The front and rear bumper are now tied together using a 1 1/4" OD tube on each side that goes from the rear bumper to the front bumper on the inside of the body. This posting is a bit premature, since I don't have them acutally bolted on. They're all welded up, and the paint is drying. OK, it's been drying for a couple days now, and I need to finish the steel belly band up before I take the top of the tub off one more time. I'll snap more photos of the finished product once I get the top of the tub back off and the stuff's all bolted on, but here's a quick shot of how I did it. It's really pretty simple, and it was about $35 in materials ( not counting the IPAs ). Hopefully, I'll get some respectable pictures of the whole thing up tomorrow....

Battering ram style! Looks great, dude! I'll be sure to stay out of your way on the next trail ride.

That's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard... You truly are a poet.

Nice. Not easy getting the angles right and still find you can bolt the top back on. I did the same thing on my ATTEX GT-2 to tie in the roll cage to the frame

Golly! Thanks a ton. I lack a lot of finesse, and the ability to afford a nice TIG (or even a large MIG), so I make do with the 40-year old Montgomery Ward stick welder and a pile of 6013 rod. I got it all bolted on tonight and I'll post the pictures tomorrow. It's stronger than I thought it would be, and should be able to be yanked around by any corner now, without worry. I remember when you built the Attex, and it was a bit of inspiration for this mod. I may never need the extra support, but it's refreshing to know that it's there if I do.

Hey, whatever it takes to get the job done! I may put something like that in my Hustler. I just built a body band and never put the bumper back on, but I think it would look more complete with bumpers.

Wow 6013 Monkey Ward welding. The committee will have to consult on this one and upgrade the award to something more prestigious. Keep up the good work. I think they were considering the "Buzz Box Award". They keep asking questions about AC or DC. I told them That was none of their business.

HA! ...... if I can just slip in that ALL of the coathangers remained in the closet for this project, perhaps that will influence their vote?

::EDIT:: Here are a couple decent shots of how it's put together.

The more I see this the more I like it. I am thinking that would be a good thing to do to my trainer when I get to tearing it down. I could tie into it and use it to help the body sag. Maybe tie it right down to the frame too and a cross member under the rear seat...... I love the stuff you come up with!

Thanks Larry... I can't take all the credit. This sort of thing has been done before, but maybe not to a Hustler. I did just what you're talking about to Big 5. I have a 1/4" thick plate that comes up from the frame, about six inches wide, that ties into the inner and outer belly band, and helps to hold it up. I don't know if I have pictures of it in the gallery, but I'll shoot over there quick to give you an idea of what it looks like....

EDIT:: That didn't take long... Are you looking to do something like this? This is done with flat-stock between the body halves. You can see the plates I bent up that come down from the inner band and go down to the frame. Sorta...

If you cant take the credit you can at least take the credit for bringing it out again. I never seen it before. I heard about Jerseybigfoots attex but never seen it or pictured it like that I guess.

You told me about that flat stock at Ash but some how I never seen the pictures of it. Thanks for bringing that up with the link. Not sure what I'm going to do yet and it wont be for a while but that does look like a great idea. The bumper thing is cool also though. Be cool to do both. That would probably be way overkill but that's awesome. Now I just need more time and more motivation........nice weather would be nice too.........lol. Springs coming!!! Hopefully that will help.

Mike look what you started. "Bumper Wars" I felt the need to add more steel after seeing your project. Wait till you see the rear bumper.
