  • Missing Key

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement key for the 950? I know its somewhere in the house, I put in on a yellow marine key floaty and now I cannot find it anywhere. How hard would it be to replace the ignition switch with a craftsman riding mower switch.. How hard would it be to do a field repair? Still have not had time to get anything done to my 950. I have an extra and those keys are extremely common and I have about a dozen of that key in the house..

Most 6x6's use the same key / ignition switch as riding mowers. You shouldn't have to replace the ignition.

Ok, that is good to know. But does anyone have any idea what particular key was used in the 1984~85 Hustler 950s? I know my craftsman keys don't work the key kinda looks like a mini cross.

I may have lead you wrong then. I looked at a Hustler for sale for a guy a while back and it used the small cross key like you mentioned. Perhaps that ignition switch was swapped out. Sorry.

the older keys that came in the hustler are the old lawn mower key . but in the last few years some keys a strait with a bump that goes all the way up the key and has a black plastic big end ( Most craftsman) That wont work on the hustler. you need the older style key if it hasnt been changed out.any lawn mower shop will have it.Yepp looks like a little cross.

Dan, that one is a standard lawn and garden key. I replaced the Ignition switch when I rewired the machine. I think it even had a craftsman key in it. some of the later craftsman mowers did use a different key so that may be why yours won't work. you should be able to pick one up at Lowes or Home Depot. Just grab one and I'll try to remember to give you some spares next week. there are usually a dozen or more in the door pocket of my truck where I store the drain plugs for all the machines

It's probably just a standard Indak key, right? They're amazingly common. Don't change the ignition....

It's one of these. IMG_0137.jpg they are the same key, one just has a black plastic "handle". It was a brand new switch and I never take the keys out of my machines, so you might have to wiggle a bit to get it in. These are called "Indak" keys (brand name). If one of them won't work, then the tip of the key broke off in the switch. not too common, but it happened to our moderator at CAW a few years back. If one of these keys won't start it, I will eat my fuzzy purple hat

Oh, that'll go down nicely with a hot pickle on the side. They've been steeping in the jar with their evil breathren, the pickled habanero eggs.... a perfect chaser for the hat....

                    Issue Fixed!!!!

I went by Lowe's on my way home from work and bought an Arnold Universal Key.. I did have to get out the grinder and knock off the tip. But it does indeed work as I was able to fire it right up.

good deal! glad to hear your back up and running. Not surprised that you had to grind... those keys are probably stamped out at about a million an hour, and the tolerances probably aren't too tight on them.

you are an evil culinary genius. I look forward to having my intestines "smoted" by one (or 9) of those eggs

luckily the machine started, so the hat gets to remain a decorative item
