  • 950 frame in a 980 body

can you put a 950 frame in a 980 body,i no the seat rails have to be taller but what about the axel spaceing.

Ugh... I keep forgetting to check that for you. I was up riding it yesterday for a bit, but I never remember to check the spacing. I'd be astonished if the spacing was different....

I had my Hustler 980 frame ,upper and lower tub stored in my friends shop, and while he was gone some one broke into his shop and stole the 980 frame. I sent a private message to jpswift and this what he wrote me back.

you can do exactly what you mentioned and stretch the seat supports upward and a 950 frame will work perfectly. Meinfeld did this and it worked perfectly. Good luck with it!

I talked with Richard a couple of years back about doing the same thing..went to his home personally and found that the middle axle for the cluster gears was in the wrong place.. tub molding had the molded spot for gear clearance several inches from the needed spot...bought a 950 top and bottom for the 950 frame...AND, I am curious as to how this thread ends up, I don't always believe what I have been told...good luck with this shane and keep me posted...eddie

I sent a private message to jpswift and he told me that you can install a 950 frame inside a 980 tub. All you need to do is extended the front seat frame to fit the deeper 980 tub.

It's just made out of metal and plastic. You can make the combination work one way or another if it doesn't line up perfectly.

Mike is right, this sounds like the perfect opportunity to even go as far as building a custom frame just to suit your needs. If you use a 950 frame and the holes don't line up, you can just weld small pieces of sheet metal over the origional holes in the frame and put new axle holes wherever you need them.

I was wondering the same myself, so I called Raceone3 and had him measure the spacing on the axles of his 980. The distance between axle centers is the same on the 950 and 980 rear-to-center at 27". I believe the distance on the middle-to-front axle the 950 is 1" longer then the 980.

I dropped my 950 frame in my old 980 body the other day just for giggles and the holes lined up perfectly. Axle and bolt holes where an identical match. Maybe I got lucky?
