new to all this how do i know what i have

I bought a hustler of my brother in law he seems to think it is a 74 hustler 900 but i have no idea how to tell. It has a kohler 440 in it and the borg and warner t20 is in the back of my truck awaiting new seals and what not. it is going to be a big project thats for sure i just wanna know what Ive got and what i got myself into. any info will be much appreciated.

If it is a HDPE plastic body with the Kohler 440 it is most likely a Hustler 900. The Hustlers are great machines and the project will be well worth it when you get it up and running again!
