  • First 6x6 Hustler

    Hello Everyone,

My boys brought home an old Hustler a few days ago. After doing a lot of reading on this great board I think it’s a 950. It has the Briggs 18hp opposed flat head engine with the T-20 and it has the plastic tub.

I am sure I am going to have a lot of questions. I have worked on many off road vehicles but never one like this.

We have it stripped down to the frame and we have been doing a lot of machining and welding. We just finished coating the whole frame with POR15. We have all the axle bearings pressed off and I will be buying all new bearings.

I pulled the diamond shift plungers and checked the shift pins. They look very good but the o-rings are shot.

Does anyone know what size these o-rings are?

I have also found the bearings at several places online but I couldn’t find the outer bearing mounting plates online. I know RR has them but I wanted to look for other sources.

    Thanks
    Brian

I can't remember right off the top, but the shifter O-rings are either #40 or #44 from the plumbing section of any hardware store. just take an old one to compare.

for bearings and flanges, check out Buffalo Bearings Inc. their website isn't great, but if you call Greg (Jr or Sr.) they will set you up with whatever you need for bearings and flanges. the Hustlers use 1 3/16" outer bearings and they get pretty pricey due to being an oddball size, but Buffalo Bearing will be by far the best price you can find. I want to say the outers were $18 each versus $83 each from motion industries!

I can't attest to long-term quality in these bearings, as I've only been running them for about 5 months. I've beat the living hell out of them so far. and they've spent a lot of their life under water. For not having any seal to speak of (they are greasable, though...) they've done their job for $9.00 and change per piece.....

      HC206-19 1-3/16" Insert Bearing

If you have the chance to find a double-sealed bearing for a good price, it may be a good idea for our application. If you don't spend a lot of time in the water or knee-deep in mud, this may be a viable option. I don't want to take anything away from Buffalo Bearings, since I continually give them a lot of business, and Race is spot-on; they have some of the best service I've had the pleasure of encountering....

          Hustler 950 Finally Running

I would like to thank 6x6world and all the members for this great site. I have worked on many bikes, atv’s and vehicles but nothing like these 6x6’s. I would not have been able to get this thing rebuilt without the information here.

Our Hustler was in very bad shape. My son and I have been working on it for 3 months going through every inch. We have done a lot of machining, welding, cleaning and painting. We rebuilt the transmission and part of the engine and all of the drive train
          .
Today. we finally got to drive it and all went well. This thing is fun and has a smoother ride than I expected.

We still need to completely rewire everything. We jump started it today because we just couldn’t wait any longer.

Here is a video of some of the rebuild. I will have more video of it running later.

          Thanks again.

          Brian

Brian, you did a great job on that Hustler. What a difference seeing the before and after video. It looks like a brand new machine. Nice work.

Dayco HP2031 Belt Works on a Hustler 950

              Thanks Mike.

I Just thought I would mention that the Dayco HP2031 belt fits perfectly on my stock Hustler 950 with the Briggs 18HP L-Head twin.

This information is in the forum but was hard to find specifically for the 950.

              Maybe this will help someone.

              Thanks
              Brian
