  • Steering Levers

Im planning on modifying the steering levers location on my Hustler. Their offset from the center to the left and I plan on making them in the center. Can the lever's and the bars at the base that they are attached too. Be removed without having to lift the frame out of the tub?

If your laterals (steering levers) are original, they bolt in place with 5/16" (I think) bolts on each end of the shaft that each lateral is attached to. Two thin metal tabs come off the frame, and laterals ride on the bolts/locknuts installed through this tab. I think there's plenty of room to get the bolts and lock nuts out.

I replaced my Hustler pieces with Attex-style levers which are a bit more robust in the lower end. I ended up centering them, as well. It's much more comfortable to drive than wedging your left foot into that small area.

I did just what you are thinking about on your Hustler. I moved my laterals to a single rod. They were centered by a previous owner. He simply cut the laterals off the bottom bar and re-welded them closer to the center line of the Hustler. I just made the cut the bottom bars down and drilled out the bottom bar to accept 3/8" threaded rod and installed grease zergs.
