I need to replace all the gears on one side. Is there a source out there or should I plan to buy the gears and round stock separately, and weld them up?

Richard's Relics *may* be able to help you out with a stock set up for your Hustler but in the long run, it may be cheaper to source the sprockets and tubes and make your own. Buffalo Bearings here in Buffalo, NY carries good quality sprockets from G&G (Omaha, NE), and there are lots of other sources out there for the sprockets. You'll need to get some DOM tubing (without the weld seam like pipe has) for the tubes, with a 1 3/16" inner diameter. Then, you have to make the inner diameter of the sprockets you buy fit the outer diameter of the sprocket tubes. I had to do quite a bit of machine work on the sprocket tubes for my Swamp Fox. Between boring out the DOM several thousandths to fit over the axles, to enlarging the bore on the sprockets to fit the DOM, to reboring the tube after the sprockets were welded (the bore tightened up a bit....) It can be a real pain, but if you're on a budget, it might be cheaper than buying new.

I found #50 chain sprockets at Tractor Supply for about $10 apiece, but they're probably made in China out of pot metal that will shear all the teeth on the first hard turn. I'm in the same boat as you, kpike, but I need ALL new sprockets.

just got my 980 /orderd 1 axle and a couple of drive sprockets from richard! i just cant build this stuff with the time involved!65.00 on sprocket/105.00 on axle! tooling cost way more!

I hear ya. One the machinist at work said he would do it at his home shop for me. I picked up the sprockets. $65/pc is a good price.

Try posting in the "Wanted" section for stuff you need. Some of us have extra parts collected throughout the years, never know until you ask. Look on eBay, Craigslist, and search engines looking for "parts machines". I try to avoid richard relics, he puts his parts at a premium.
