  • New to Hustlin'

Hey guys. Here is the new beast:

Unsure about the year, I believe it is a 950.

Apparently you can put a 980 lower on it to get more room for bigger tires?

The T-20 is, as far as we can tell, in need of a rebuild. The adjustments are at the end of their....adjustment, so it will have to be rebuilt..

Other than that, it's in good shape. I'm looking for any weaknesses or must-do's for this machine to keep it in good shape.

Looking forward to testing it out!

    Greg

Wow, that almost looks brand new!! There should be a sticker on the gas tank with the model and serial numbers; I believe that yours is a 945-HK, as it has the Kohler K341. The T-20 is really easy to rebuild, just use Mike's guide. Enjoy your Hustler!

Thanks guys! Do you have a link to Mike's rebuild post? I parsed all his posts and couldn't find it. I am looking forward to getting this thing into perfect condition.

Here is the first page of the guide. If you look on the left side of the home page, there is a link that says "How to Articles", and in that is a section for transmissions.

How to rebuild your Borg Warner Skid Steer T20 transmission from start to finish. This article has over 100 pictures and detailed instructions for rebuilding the tranny in your 6x6 amphibious atv

Hopefully the trans was not damaged by running it with no wear material left on the bands. That gets real expensive real quick.

Yes, you can install a 980 lower tub to have more room for running bigger tires. A couple of forum members have converted their 950's into 980 deep tubs. You can also install 25" inch Mud bug and 25 " inch Good year rawhide tires on a 950 too. Your 950 looks to be in very good shape.

All Hustlers do have a design flaw of a weak T-20 mount. They have a tendency to twist out of the lower mounting bolts. There are several different ways to go about making it stronger, listed in the various builds here on the forums. But all have been made stronger by utilizing the top 4 mounting holes along with the 4 original mounting holes on the bottom.

Oh and that is a sweet looking Hustler..

Sorry I don't mean to hyjack your thread but I was wondering what the difference between a 950 and the 945hk. Are the frames the same?

From what I know, they're pretty much the same machine. No real frame or body difference to speak of.

My daughter and I took this thing out today for a 10 minute evaluation run...

                          1. Have to put the choke on a spring assist, so stays un-choked, the knob likes to ease out as you are riding...

                          2. fuel delivery issue. I assume there is some sort of pump that sucks fuel from the frint tank back to the engine? It kept starving for fuel, and would only run in the choked position. The carburetor likely needs a good cleaning.. I cannot see the carb assy as it is shrouded, but such systems are no mystery to me (and if they are, ol' 832steven there can figure it out)

                          3. tires SUCK. they are almost slick. Will need more aggressive tires ASAP. I see people running 25" tires on these 950's... anything has to be better than the ones on there now...

                          SOOO-

trans is coming out for an inspection, and carb is coming off for a cleaning. Have to find some tires in the meantime!

Congrats on the new (REALLY good looking) toy. You should be able to run a tire in the 25" range on 9"rims with minimal spacing. I think tires with the larger rim sizes will likely be too tall. One of the best improvements I did to my old 950 was to slap a set of 25' mudbugs on it. It don't matter what other mods you do to one of these machines, if your tires SUCK then everything else is just for show...
