  • Quieter exhaust for Max II

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has put a quieter exhaust on their atv? My Max II has the 16 HP Vanguard, with the exhaust exiting over the left rear tires. I love how it sounds, but all my friends who go riding with me, seem to always want to come up and chat, and Im always having to kill the engine to hear them, even at idle. I remember back when I had my four wheeler, seeing "stealth" exhaust kits, and was wondering if anyone has done this? Any input would be appreciated!

All the new Max AATVs come with an inside the body, quiet exhaust system. Call Recreatives and you can order one directly from them. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

Think you'll find that the new Max has a different tub and/or top configuration that has room for the inside exhaust which yours may not. I also found the flex hose used to go from manifold to muffler made much of the noise.

Good point! The tub is the same, BUT the upper body on the machines that used the internal exhaust have a flat rear cargo compartment, not a "stepped" style one like on the 90's and older Max II's.

I think the ultimate in quiet is the Kohler 23 hp. in the Max II,late models have a ducted air intake system. Super quiet , Downside though is no recoil start as the duct is over the engine fan intake. When approaching at low rpms I get more comments on how quiet it is rather than the uniqueness of the amphibian.

I'm with you there Eldon. I have a green Max 2 with the 20hp Kohler, and it is super quiet, much more so than the 18 hp Briggs in my other Max2. The thing I like about it best though is hydraulic valve adjustment, theres never any valve clatter and its a potent package with the 20hp engine. This machine has the factory track system which adds the outer support rails and another layer of bearings.
The 18 Briggs does have a backup pull start and I have used that feature in emergencies. I've adjusted the valves on the Briggs twice now, its a bit inconvenient but once you do it once its no big deal.

I find everything on the Max a challenge first time but second time around one knows the sequence and what is required.Yes the Kohler's hydraulic valves are a definite plus. The quiet engine of the Kohler is a combination of muffler and the cooling air intake duct. Mine has the factory track set up and bearing extensions too,There are some nice track systems out there for sure but I think the factory tracks will float best on snow and soft ground but Adair I think would have more traction and they will swim some too.

well I havent had a chance, or the money to get around to working on my exhaust, I love the sound of it, and get quite a few compliments on how "mean" it sounds....just need to keep it out of my ear when someone on the trail pulls up to talk. The flex tubing theory is a valid point, I wonder if I get some header wrap from summit racing and wrap all that flex tubing, I wonder how much that would help. I was hoping to be able to cut off the old muffler above the rear tire and replace it with a quieter slip on muffler, but all the slip on's are fart pipes to quads.....definitely not the sound i am going for!
