  • 93 Max IV Wiring problems

I am repairing wiring problems created by someone disconnecting, cutting, and basically leaving things where they lay! I have downloaded and worked with the wiring diagram off the 6x6 World site. Most corrections have been made although some of the wiring is not shown on the diagram. I need to know where the white wire goes from the neg. side of the ampmeter back to the fuse holder alongside the engine. It runs through the fuse and then to the female 2 wire connector but does not continue out of the connector.

The gas gauge wires are simply hanging down under the dash a brown with yellow stripe and a blue one. There are three connectors on the back of the gas gauge---any ideas what goes where? And if one is missing?

The other problem I have is the red wire coming out of the rectifier/regulator---1 red wire with a female spade type connector--very short wire -- just hanging there. I have checked the starter, all grounds, etc. and believe this is all I need to get this up and running right with everything working again. Any help is appreciated!

What engine do you have? Also i have never seen a MAX with electric fuel guage, it may be an add on.

18 hp Vanguard. That sounds interesting about the fuel gauge---What type do they have? There are two "extra" 2 "holes drilled in the dash and about 4 rectangle openings for rocker type switches. I could see that things were removed but I've never seen another one to be able to figure it out. I can hot wire the starter and it works great -engine starts and runs good now that I went through the carb and trans seems to be working fine. just a few more wiring issues and it should be a pretty nice machine. Thanks for any help!

I've never seen an electric gauge on a Max either.
Normally, there is a float built into the gas cap with a needle that shows fuel level on the top of the cap.

Sorry, Stumped on the wiring issue. Sounds like your's has had alot of tinkering done to it.

Thanks for the info on the fuel gauge Slim Chance, I kind of wondered if it originally had a snowmobile type fuel gauge.. I think I'll just pull it out of the dash and get rid of it. I have some ideas on the other wiring issues and am going out to the shop to try them tonight. Never know--maybe I'll get lucky! I'm also going to try calling RI and see if they can shed some light--------

Look in the files where the wiring diagrams are and print the ignition switch upgrade diagram also. This may help. Good luck

UPDATE: You two guys put me on the right track! This was a stumper but turned out to pretty easy after all! I believe what happened is -they had a whole bunch of accessories wired in to who knows what -they had a short-(I found a a burned wire back by the exhaust from their custom wire job)-that took out the rectifier/regulator-they replaced it with a regulator off something else, ie:wrong color too short wire-the damage also effected aftermarket gauges, etc. in the dash and the amp meter-they never did figure out why the battery discharged and the other problems so they simply sold it to the guy I bought it from. It ran but would not charge, besides other intermittent issues. he got fed up with working on it and then I came along looking for a project --- To make a long story short-I repaired all wiring with solder and shrink wrap and put it back to factory. What I didn't notice is that they had replaced the amp meter with a volt meter--soooo when I hooked up the + and -wires as in the diagram --basinga! No circuit! An amp meter has to be wired into the circuit to complete it but a voltmeter simply goes to ground and measures electromagnetic force. I love it when a plan comes together! Thanks again for your help and comments ---that is what led me to believe that everything had been rigged! It Was! She now starts and runs great, is charging, and it's ready to go!!!
