  • Mor Newbs! Prospective Max owner with a few questions.

I'm looking to buy this max and wanted to get some season vets opinions.

Seller says: It needs a gas tank, battery, and wheel chains. Price is good. Let me know what you think.

    Some additional questions:
    1. Can you ride with two people side by side? Seems like it might be tight.
    2. Where is the best place to buy chain?
    3. Where is the best place for sprockets?
    4. Any idea on the year of this machine from the pictures?

Thanks for the help. Hope to pick it up this weekend!.

Looks like an early 70s Max II with a 2-stroke JLO. Unless you are looking for a serious project, I would pass on this one. It needs a heck of a lot more than what you listed.

This one has been for sale for months on Craigslist. I know this is the one from Virginia. The seller is full of it when they told you it just needs this or that. This machine is only worth a couple hundred bucks and their asking price, which was $700 or $800 is way, way too high. Steer clear of this machine. It's a very early Max II with an ABS plastic body, not HDPE, it has #40 chain, not #50 and it would be nothing but a money pit. You're much better off finding another 6 wheeler.

From what I have been reading on here. There isn't a 6x6 on craigslist that you guys haven't seen.

I figured it was the case when I was looking at it. I was hoping that it wasn't that bad off. I like projects. Maybe if I can get it for a bit cheaper than he is asking for it. I might go check it out.

I really appreciate the honest answers.

Oh yes, we ususally catch a good amount of them that get listed on Craigslist. We just don't want you to buy something that's a money pit, start restoring it and get totally discouraged and give up. Just looking at this one I can pretty much tell you what you'll need to do:

-Replace the upper and lower body
          -All new wiring
-New seals, gaskets, and O-rings in the T-20
          -All new sprockets, chains, bearings
-Possible frame repairs (it looks soft and rusty in spots and the first Max II frames were weaker than the newer ones and susceptible to breaking/bending/cracking)
-Motor swap.....the 2 strokes aren't very trail friendly.

That's just the big things, I'm sure there are many more little things to do as well. Look at it this way, you'd basically be buying a frame, axles, transmission, and wheels and tires. For a few hundred bucks, MAYBE. But, anything more than that, I'd say avoid this one unless you want to do some major work to it. Keep an eye on the ebay and Craigslist section of the site. There are some good deals that get posted there.

I agree with these guys. You dont want to get bogged down and give up on a toy, BUT i bought one being in the same shoes you were. These guys are amazing and know what they are talking about. to give a little perspective, i found one in def better shape but nothing to brag about. my thing was not wantig to spend any kind of money on one until i knew i was gonna like it. I bought mine for 100$ bill. so far i have only had to replace coil on my JLO motor, soak chainsin oil. i took axles out greases and painted outside peices, resealed them to th tub. Its all little stuff but your real money is going to come i that trans has problems let me tell you first hand! i know i got lucky with mine so i am passing my .02 along to say that yes there is nothing wrong with a project, but these guys know what to look for to be able to tell a difference between a project and something that will never be worth it. Good luck and if this one doesnt work out be patient there will be another!
