  • Max 4 Transmission problem whats the cost for a rebuild Help!

Hello I am consdiering buying a 2000 max 4 but the owner states that there is a problem with the tranny , he post this about the problem
"the transmission is working intermittently. For example, it will only sometimes turn right,. What could cause this?

I have no experince with the T20 , but i can figure it out should i have to rebuild it . If a guy is going to open up this tranny may as well reaplace all the seals and bearings as well while i am there.

I am going to assume the worst that it needs drums and bands since it looks like the owner did beat on this unit hard , so what what do u think it would cost to replace these parts and get this max running properly . What do u think a 2000 max 4 should sell for with a bad tranny witha 18 hp briggs? Keep in mind i dont know if it will need axles, or axel bearings, sprockets, chains or any holes in tub . If the tranny is completely shot on the inside i heard it could cost 1500.00 in parts alone with no labor. So i am just saying if a guy down the street from u had a max 4 with a bad tranny what would u give for it . Thanks cled .

You should look at the parts you mentioned and determine what it needs before you make an offer.
The t20 could only need a fluid change and adjustments or it could need a complete rebuild.
You wont know untill you open it and look inside
They are available used and reconditioned.

I've heard that new units are $1200 from the factory. Rebuilts usually run closer to half of that. All 4 drums will not have to be replaced, but you could have one bad one....if you can find used, Probably $100 for that. A seal kit from R.I is $60 something. Bands relined are $35 each times 4, plus shipping each way, so figure $160. Basically, it is fairly cheap and easy to freshen one, but let things go too long and you are looking at big $$$. Hopefully the bands on that one are just slipping because they are worn. Reline them, new seals, and you are back to riding for less than $250.

I will not have the luxury of determining what the problem is.

Ya i will have to buy it to find out what really is the problem. Will have to take ot home and see how much adjustment is left to see if thats the problem. If its adjusted correctly .the tranny and if theres no more adjustments left on the tranny then it will be time to pull it apart. So i have to make an offer accordingly that is equal to something that does not need to be fixed. but how much would you offer for a max like this. what do you think this max for it is worth. guessing that the tranny is bad. What would your max offer be. And who sells t20 transmissions for 1200 dollars. where would I get that from. thank cled. Oh PS How do 6 wheelers do in the sand dunes.

There are lots of factors to consider to determine what it is worth. Is it on Craigslist? Can you post a link?
