  • Broken A Chain Yesterday

Well, I use my Max IV to maintain my property, but also to help out the local snowmobile club (I'm a member). Yesterday while hauling about 20 2x6x10, I heard a POP and then no drive on the right side.

I thought "oh crap, I just lost the transmission". Pulled the floors and I had just broken a transmission chain. Luckily my Jeep was not far away and neither was home. I grabbed a grinder and generator, cut off the broken link and installed a master link and she was all set.

Makes me think though - if I had been in the woods deeper, I may have been SOL - they do not drive with only one side working.

Even riding within walking distance of home, I carry a tool bag. Basic hand tools, chain breaker, master links, and a few feet of chain. I lay all these out on a towel and roll them up in it... this way I can roll it back out in the woods and it's easier to keep track of stuff. Also in there are a flashlight, small compressor for tires, spark plugs a can of ether and a lighter. With these items I can usually limp a machine home or back to camp.
