  • Duromax in Max II

Hi Everyone. i am considering putting a Duromax 16hp in my mid 1980's Max II. My Tecumseh Oh160 has some blowby and is leaking some oil and it appears would be better to sell the parts and get a new engine.

The questions I have are does this engine work without too many mods? How about the exhaust, throttle and choke cable hook ups? Does it fit under the Max II top? How about the belt - will I need to use a different sized one? Fuel pump, I assume the Duromax is gravity fed, do I need to tap a vacuum port into the block and add a fuel pump? I searched the site, and found some good info, but nothing that answered these questions.

    Thanks!
    Rob

budzinsk,if this link works ,check out these threads on this subject. I was considering the same for an Attex 252 Colt but have decided on an 18hp opposed Kohler I already have.

I have a clone engine in my attex. Not sure on the fitment under the hood but you will need a fuel pump and also a pulse for the pump. I pulled my pulse from the carb with a pulse spacer. affordablegokarts: Carb Insulator w/Vacuum Takeoff Also had to make a custom exhaust. I bypassed the governor and hooked the throttle right to the throttle bar. You should be able to use your old clutch and belt. Only other thing I would watch is these engines are very lean for emissions and you will probably need to richen them up. Hope this helps. I've done 2 conversions and doing a 3 in the spring. Engines run well.

I did that a while back to the green one in my avatar. It had the newer top which has a higher deck than yours but it fit that fine. For the exhaust, I pulled the stock muffler off the motor, made an adapter for flex tube, and re-used the external muffler. For the throttle and choke hookups you will need to make brackets to hold the cable, and drill holes in the existing levers for the cable to hook up. I think I re-used the stock belt, but I'm not positive. For the fuel system, you can remove the duromax tank and add a simple pulse type pump. You can tap into the spacer between the carb and the engine, or tap into a valve cover to get the pulse line. You can also buy the spacer or valve cover with a port already in them. Another thing that should be done is to make a duct so the hot air from the engine is taken out of the body.
