New to the fold, bought a used MAX IV in good shape, but I am having a problem stopping the chain slap. First of all, is it something to be tolerated or can it be adjusted out? Raised the wheels off the ground to adjust, and when I get the bottom of the chain apparently tight enough, the top of the chain seems way too tight. If I leave it that way and drive it, will the chain "even out" in tension top-to-bottom?

max IV chain issues

Are you speaking about the front and rear chains, or the T-20 to rear axle chains?
Front and rear chains are easy, just follow what Jim and Whipper spoke on, and you'll be good.
Cbass and I ran into an issue with his Max IV's chain always having slack at the T-20 to rear axle, and at a few times too much slack that the chain eventually snapped. The issue was that the T-20 was shifting inside the transmission mount. When the machine was up and in neutral, we could tighten the chains to specs, but once we moved the machine about 10-30 feet under load, we noticed the terrible sound of the chain slapping all the metal parts around it. Back into the garage with the engine out, and we saw the culprit,, two sheared T-20 mount bolts. We fixed this issue by making a craddle for the T-20, cutting two 1.5x1.5x3.5in angle, welding it to the rear of the Max IV frame, holding the T-20 down with two 5x1x.25inch metal to the angle that was welded to the frame. Pretty much, we duplicated the factory T-20 hold-downs that is on the front of the T-20 for the rear. If this isn't your issue, it won't hurt to check out your tranny to insure you don't go thru what we did with Cbass's Max IV. Hope I helped!!HUSTLEMANIAC and a HONORARY MEMBER of the
