I just picked up this max its a 99 seems to be in good shape. But want to know how do you know its time to get the bands relined. It does seem that when driving you have to pull very far back almost to seat to get input.

Grinding noises are a sure sign to STOP driving and inspect BEFORE drum damage.
The most common symptom of the t-20 needing new/relined bands seems to be: It's not turning properly, and after adjustment, it doesn't change.
In your MaxIV, the hardest part is getting the trans out of the machine.....Rebuilding it is easy after that.

By "input" do you mean you have to pull back that far in reverse to get it to move backwards? This could be something as simple as a band adjustment. That's as simple as tightening in the plunger bolts a turn or two.
With the bands properly adjusted on a MAX IV the stick movement should be right at 7 inches at the top of the sticks.I just check with a tape measure from the dash to the sticks, remove freeplay then pull full back and read measurement. Ive seen perfectly good transmissions with enough adjustment to get them into specs with 15 inches movement.I asume they had never been adjusted in 20+years use. Changing the fluid is another thing that dosent get done very often. Factory recommends every 50 hours of use. I suck the fluid from a T20 with a vacume fluid changer. By inserting the 1/4 inch plastic line in the top fill plug and pushing it srtaight down it hits a web in the bottom of the case. This gets all but about one OZ. of fluid out. Factory recomends 28 oz of ATF and 4OZ. of positrack differential fluid additive. I prefer type F fluid, others dont care what type of fluid you use.
Adjusting the bands is easier with the rear seat removed and the battery removed.I usually disconnect the springs on the sticks so there is no fighting them.If the transmission goes forward - reverse and steers I would change the fluid and adjust the bands before declaring it dead. I have no doubt you can find all the info you need for these tasks on this site. good luck, have fun riding
