  • New guy here with a couple questions

Hey guys, just got me a max iv that I don't know to much about. Wondering if I can get some info from you guys I wll post a few pics and see if you all can help me out cause I really want to get out and ride this thing. The guy put a diesel engine on it that I really don't like so thinking about getting rid of that but not where to start, he says it runs but it's only pull start for now the starter is not hooked up and there is no throttle cage can't even tell where to hook one up. Let me know what you think and point me in the direction of where I should start this is my first one so I don't know to much about them. The key is no longer there but all the wires are still ran to the back.

That is no way to make a electric starter to your 1B40 Engine. One the flywheel is no gearwheel. You have no generator. So you have no Battery.
Sometimes it is not easy to start a Diesel when the weather is cold. Here we use "Start Pilot". This is Diethlether. We spray it in the Air cleaner, but just a little bit, and than the diesel starts, even when it`s cold.
Here i find a product with english name :Halfords | Bradex Easy Start 300ml
    kind regards
    Frank

My guess is that the previous owner was way over his head with putting the new motor in. I would suggest putting in a Briggs 23 hp or larger motor. Ebay is usually a good place to look...and for just a few more dollars, you could get a 40 hp Generac.
Where are you located? Maybe another local member would volunteer to come over and explain to you all the little things it will need.

Thanks for the Info guys. I'm located in the Dallas fort worth area if there is any local members in the area I would pay for your gas if you could swing by. What do you think I could sell the diesel engine for ? And what are some of the other Generac names of the othe engines ?

Was this the Max IV with the diesel in it that was recently listed on Craigslist?

If you were just a little closer, I'd swing by and help you out. lol
From what I saw in the pictures, you will have a lot of little things to wrap up. I'm getting that impression from clues like how loose the belt looks, and it also looks to be about half as wide as it should be. Also, your left front tire is on backwards, but the right front is not....

For replacement motors, look at these: Generac 40HP Max 33HP Net Horizontal Shaft Engine with No Muffler | eBay
Briggs Stratton Vanguard 23 HP Horizontal Engine Electric Start New | eBay
There are many more to choose from, including Kohler engines. The clutch you have on the Subaru, is hopefully NOT meant for the diesel. With any luck it is from the original motor for the machine, and is for a 1" straight /keyed shaft. Buy a motor that uses that clutch, (or sell it to me ), to save yourself some money.

Thanks for the info buggy man I'm looking for a new engine now. Just have a few more questions if I was to go with the vanguard it will it bold right up with out any fab work ? And do you have to pull the clutch off first to get the engine out ? I hear people talking about RI for some little parts I need is there a link to the web site ? And I can post better pics of the clutch so someone can tell me what I need to do in that case. Does anyone have engine pics of the same machine that I can look at to get an ideal of how everything sits ? Thanks in advance for all the help.

Maybe your first step should be to call Recreatives Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 Give Jay your serial # and he will tell you what motor was original. I think that most of them were equipped with the 18 briggs (same motor as the 23, diff bore/stroke) because it was cheaper. If that is the case, then yes, the 23 briggs will bolt in/plug up with no modifications.
It might be a good idea to buy a new belt from Jay also to get the right one....unless someone on here can give you the dimensions/part # for the one you need.
Your motor should pull right out with clutch attached, but I think it is easier to remove the whole motor stand from the frame (4 bolts).
When you bolt the new motor in, here is the alignment: Clutch Offset - Amphibious ATV Pictures
To pull the clutch, just remove the bolt in the center, it should slide right off the shaft.

i just replaced my 16 hp tecumseh with a 23 hp briggs vanguard and it went pretty easy needed a longer belt than the original one and I had to put a small spacer behind the clutch but other then that and rewiring it was a piece of cake it bolted right up. good luck and remember to use the search button on this site.

Hey guys back again with a few more questions. After calling the guys from the above number they where very helpful in assisting me in information on mine it's a 1994 max IV... I pulled the motor today should have my new one by Wensday can you tell if the two plates that you bolt the engine to are factory or does it look like they welded them to try and mount that diesel motor ? And I have one more problem looks like the seat belt got chewed up in one of the chains and it has put it off track, can I just loosen the nuts on the sprocket and put it back in place ?

Those two plates welded on are not factory. Someone added those.

Is your front axle is pushed out and not aligned with the rest of the sprockets or is the middle axle the one that's off? All you have to do is take the wheel and tire off, loosen the set screw on the inner bearing race of the inner AND outer bearings. Next, using a chisel or punch and hammer tap the hole (not the threaded hole the set screw goes in) in the eccentric locking collar on the inner and outer bearings (tap them so it's spinning counter clockwise). It'll then be loose. Next, tap the axle back in so it's lined up correctly. Then tighten back down your set screws after you tap your eccentric locking collars back (clockwise) so they're tight and you're good.

But the axles are lined up just that one sprocket is just off a hair. Almost like I can push the chain back over with a breaker bar and get it back on.

Had a quick question before I go and drop some cash on a new motor, I think I may be in over my head with this thing... With the engine out if I roll this thing around and I pull back on one of the lever's should it stop it or will it keep rolling ?

The transmission will operate with or without the engine. So, when you are pushing it around, as long as you have it in forward gear, when you pull back on one of the levers it will stop that side of the Max.
