  • Max owner mods and "inventions"

My buddy and I went half on our mid 90s max 2 last year. With all of your help I have since replaced all of the bearings and flanges, replaced every chain, and made my chain adjusters myself as described here. Our main use of this ride will be for ice fishing on Lake Erie. We didn't have any ice here even on the ponds last year so no fishing last winter but hopefully this year. Anyways I want your guys pics or ideas on mods you have made yourselves for your vehicles. I want to hide a toolkit somewhere in the machine and a can of ether. A tow strap also Was also thinking of making something so we cold mount a spud bar to the max. I figure if we ever do go through the ice it would be easiest to get out onto ice pulling or throwing winch cable to someone connecting the winch cable to middle of spud bar and dropping it through a good hole in ice ahead and pulling max out. After dropping bar through hole in ice you would pull it up tight and it would catch underside of ice horizontally. This works at least in my mind and hopefully will never have to be done. Any ideas or cool hillbilly rigs anyone has come up with I would like to see. We had snow yesterday and I took it out in yard with my 5 year old daughter. She loves to get growing full speed and spinning into a donut in this max it works great in snow would not want to try it in grass or a dry surface though. So far I love this thing. If it works out for my buddy and I I told him we would have o upgrade soon for room for the kids as well

Ice rescue. Try a folding anchor. I have a 93 Max. Bout an action packer box from Walmart, all tools fit and it fits in the back of my machine.

      Hey Jake;
With all the motorized machines out on the lake to tie up to, a decent rope should be a big plus.
Some people use the small folding grappling hooks/anchors that West Marine sells.

Or you can get a length of re-rod at Home Depot, cut it into 12-15" lengths, weld a chain link in the center to tie a rope to for your spudded hole retrieval fix.
I use this method to hold my shanty in place on VERY windy days, except I use small tree branches about 12" long and twine, which I usually cut at the end of the day.

I don't know about you, but when I go ice fishing I usually take my 4'x6' pop-up Frabill shanty, my 6" Strikemaster Lazer Mora auger, half a dozen of my Ultra lite rods and reels, Minnows, Spikes, Waxies, Wigglers and Mousses, Coleman propane Catalytic heater/stove, 5 gallon buckets to sit on (and hopefully to put fish in), tackle box, 100ft+ of Poly rope(it floats), extra gloves, extra boots, safety Ice piks, and that's not all of it.
      Plus whatever my buddy brings!
      .
      Sooooooooo......
      .
Go over to Harbor Freight and pick up one of their small trailers and tow it behind the Max. I bought the 35"x55" trailer(#02948) that has the optional galvanized sides for 190$ and can haul all my S*^%* in it. Plus I use the H#$% out of it in the yard up north.
      later...ed

Yeah a harbor freight trailer is not a bad idea. We also do it up when we're ice fishing. A grill, tackle, aqua use, vexilar, etc etc. we will be in Michigan next month for the Midwest open ice fishing tournament put on by knutsons. It was cancelled last year no ice. I think it's on devils lake. It's hard for me to call these lakes having grown up on Lake Erie. To me if you can zip from end to end on a fast led in under a minute or two it's more of a rather large pond. Just skim ice here now a few more good nights and we may be able to fish the ponds and marinas of Sandusky bay. Probably the number on thing I keep in all my atvs, sled, etc. is starting fluid. I'm a hillbilly at heartand if a shot of cough syrup doesn't get a engine to start its not going to. Rather give it a quick shot of ether than crank it over forever with battery and drain it or pull on a rope a million times and risk breaking it 7 miles out on the ice in freezing temps when it's getting dark quick.

If you dont already have one a bilge pump. If you go through at an odd angle its surprising how fast they fill with water.

A couple of winters ago, I rigged a heater using 3" flex ducting and a 3" inline blower and some PVC fittings. It draws warm/hot air out of the engine compartment. It won't run me out, but it's enough to warm up my hands or feet. If I had and enclosure, it might do really well. I also have bought 2 trailers. one is a plastic tub-like garden trailer from Walmart that I originally bought to pull behind my Honda Big Red. The skinny tires were worthless, so I bought 4-lug wheel hubs for 5/8" or 3/4" shafts and put golf cart rims and tires on it. It had a small (1/2" or 5/8") clevis pin but I put a 1 7/8" ball coupler on it since that's what I have on my Big Red and Max. I also bought a Harbor Freight 40" x 48" flat bed trailer and put golf cart wheel spacers on the hubs so I could put golf cart rims and tires on it as well. Those tires make a big difference on soft ground. The garden trailer should float, but I've not tried it yet. I have a big plastic storage box from Walmart that I installed a couple of spring-loaded tool clips on and when I throw it on the back of the Max, the clips clip to the steel tubing rail and hold the box in place. That way if I need to get into it, I don't have to undo any straps like I used to use. I doubt the clips would hold the box doing a lot of jumping, but the sort of riding I do the box stays put. For road use, I took a SMV triangle sign and added a couple of clips to it so it clips on to the rear rail. That way it's removable as needed. I also took a $20 warning strobe from Walmart and attached it to a section of PVC pipe, and again, added a couple of tool clips so it will clip to the rail so I can add it temporarily. That way I don't have 2' of pipe and strobe permanantly attached. To keep from running the power cord all the way to the dash, I added a power plug to the rear and tied it into the lights. I also wired tail lights on my trailers using a male power plug so I can at least have tail lights on them too. Since all the Max has is head and tail lights, all I need is a hot and a ground. I hope to eventually make a windshield and some sort of lightweight bikini sort of top for it.

Max 2 with split shifters, segmented interior floor/seat, bilge, custom winch mount, front heavy rack, bilge, quiet exhaust, duromat heat shield between engine and seat, 25" tires, expanded metal over slotted engine cover, custom chain adjusters, fuse panel, roll bar, l.e.d. light for interior, and probably another half dozen things that I can't remember.

Body band for running into rouge trees that jump out in front of you while riding in the woods and a horn to warn the other trees to stay out of the way.
Borrowing tools is for the weak.

I took my plow off its frame. Bolted on a hitch and haul. When I shoot a deer, I just pull it on the basket an lift him up with the winch. What can I say, I'm old!

Mail box is empty. I did not know it was full. Did not know how to empty it. Got my 16 year old daughter to fix the problem. Only thing is, everything is gone!

Smart ! I may try that next year..I usually go down with my tractor with the front end loader on, but I always have to watch that I don't get stuck. The area is marshy and last year I sunk up to my knees trying to drag the deer to a safe spot for the tractor. I have a plow for my max too..This sounds easier than making a basket for the back not to mention being able to lift it. Brilliant !! Thank you ! The days of carrying a deer or dragging a deer for 2 miles has been long past... Always looking for a smarter easier way for my back.....Now I just have to see what I have lying around that I can put on and take off easily..

For bigger deer I've found that running the winch cable over the rollbar to the rear of the machine and loading the deer over the engine compartment is a quick way of going with the Max2.
