  • Trailer hitch

I'm in the process of reinforcing my rear frame to pull a trail meat trailer. The hitch has a 1/2 bolt no grade. My question is does a single bolt let the hitch move under stress conditions. I'm going to a 5/8 or 3/4 grade 8 bolt or drill two 3/8 holes a install two more bolts.

We try not to overload trailers but sometimes to much moose meat equals overloaded trailer.

    Thanks Jacobsrf

Here is a table for bolt strength Proof Load Tensil Strength For Grade 2, 5, & 8
I think you will find that 1/2" grade 2 bolt is far stronger than you thought.

Looks like reinforcing frame and using a grade 8 bolt with tempered washers might be the answer. Thanks for the bolt cart it will come in handy.

      Thanks again

I use a piece of 2" channel iron about 11" long in place of the big washer and a grade 8 bolt. Add gussets to outside hitch also. I have pics of hitch upgrades but not able to get to them for a couple weeks.

Thanks for the info. I machined a piece of 3 " channel to reinforce frame welded it in and machined a couple of heavy washers and surface tempered them and used a grade 8 bolt and locking nut. I'll fix the outside hitch with gussets does your hitch sit a right angle to the tub or slant down?

          Thanks Jacobsrf
