using solenoid to connect 2 batteries

This is really useful. Now here is a question that shows just how much of a newbie I am: do you keep the original intermittent solenoid in place and ADD the continous power solenoid (placing it between the 2 batteries), or does the continous power solenoid REPLACE the intermittent one? Also, if it replaces the intermittent solenoid, do you need a switch?

I did it now engine won't start

              Hi All,

My black ground wire from the switch touched my battery lead on the solenoid while I was putting things together - making sure things were ok before adding a continuous power solenoid for dual battery. Snap, crackle and pop...smoke started coming up from the engine block. Since then, the engine won't start, either with the switch or the pull cord.

              Any ideas?

                What about a different battery

I was looking at Dual use Marine batteries as they have enough cranking power to start the machine, and enough deep-cycle reserve capacity to run an electric outboard motor for a half a day. I prefer this idea to 2 batteries in order to keep the weight down

                  battery switch

in the world of power boats, this is the type of switch usually installed.

West Marine: 350A Compact Battery Switches Product Display

usually a trickle charger to keep them from discharging. batteries do not like to live in a discharged condition. if the device is stored isolated from electrics, one of those little photovoltiac cells that plug into the cigar(utility?) lighter work.
