  • Body Bolts

Hi everyone. I was wondering how you keep the bolts/nuts that hold the top and bottom of a Max II together tight? I am using regular 1/4 - 20 bolts, with the flat thin metal to hold the bolt onto the bottom tub, and I am using the following wing nuts:

It seems like after an hour of riding they are all loose... Any ideas?

Use some red loctite that should keep them from coming loose.

Red loctite is a bit much if you have to get them off on the trail, do you have flat washers on the bolts? Seems as if the bolts tend to loosen a tad on rides and do need checking but an hour seems excessive, may try to double the flat plates making the bolts good and tight.
Does you machine vibrate alot, not trail vibration but driveline vibration? Had a Tecumseh in one that was almost hard mounted and couldn't keep rear bolts in it from that, wound up putting nuts and lockwashers on those.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Lock washers, as mentioned above, should be good enough. Just keep a couple of wrenches in your tool kit (you have one in there right?) in case you have to tighten them up a bit while riding.

Make a washer out of a piece of old inner tube or similar thin rubber material. It's not perfect, but it helps a lot.

Good deal on those wing nuts! They look exactly like the factory Max II ones.

These washers work well. Hand tighten the wing nut and you will need pliers to remove. They may not work if there is too much give from the foam between halves - I have never tried that. I will try to look into this over the weekend to see if they hold even with foam in the joint.
