No reverse on one side, goes straight with both reverse sticks pulled back... Left side by itself but not the right side by itself... Diamonds seem fine.. just feels like it's slipping

also which plug do you use to check the transmission fluid

  • #2
First try adjusting the transmission. If that doesn't help then you may have a band that is worn out. Don't drive it like that because you risk damaging the drum if it isn't already and that is the more expensive part.

For checking the fluid level, use the bottom plug. Fluid should be put in the top hole until it comes out of the bottom hole. That is about 1 quart.

What exactly do you mean by adjusting... I tried adjusting three plungers kinda and the sticks

Make sure you follow the proper procedures for adjusting the bands in the transmission. There are several threads on this topic if you will use the search. Here are a couple to get you started:

The last page of the T20 rebuild how-to has details as well: Rebuild Borg Warner T20

or the T20 manual: T20 Skid Steer Manual

could it be band or not

I was told if it drives good forward its not the band... Forward seems fine, reverse straight seems fine.... Everything but reverse on right side by itself doesn't work

There are 4 bands in a T-20, one pair for the right side and one pair for the left. On each side there is one band for forward and one for reverse. Each band wraps around a corresponding drum. The 2 drums on a side operate on a planetary gear/ring gear set up, and turn in opposite directions. Clamping the band down on one of these drums forces the other one to do the spinning. Depending on what band would be bad, it would be possible to still drive forward.
T-20's also drive each side completely independently of the other. One side could be driving the machine forward while the other side is slipping.

I'm lost.... Not that mechanically inclined.... What's a reasonable price for the different amounts of work... And is there any easy troubleshooting to figure out what to do?

Start by reading those threads I posted regarding how to properly adjust the bands. Do that first since it is done in the machine and won't cost you anything. It's really not difficult once you put your hands on it. Then if that doesn't help at all, one of the threads I linked to was a step by step how-to showing you exactly how to disassemble and reassemble the transmission with a picture for every step of the process. Disassemble it (it will probably take you less than 20 minutes to get it apart once you remove it from the ATV) and you will easily be able to see which band / drum is worn.

If you just aren't comfortable doing the work then call your local Max dealer found at http://www.maxatvs.com/index.php?src...tegory=Dealers and get a quote. Or, find a used T20 transmission and swap it out yourself.

Well, i figured out how to make an adjustment... I was turning the bolt left though, that seemed to make it worse.... I'll try the other way tomorrow

I seem to be having this in my right reverse side....
Which adjustment would that be then? Topside right (if facing rear of max?)

The right side of the trans drives the right side of the machine. The bottom plungers are for forward and the top ones are for reverse on their respective sides. Hope this helps.

I'll adjust it once more, if no luck, i think it needs rebuilt ( band)

I'm in southwest Michigan.... Recommend anyone?

Don't just turn the plunger bolts. You need to follow the proper methods linked to above. You have to take some measurements to adjust them properly and get the proper amount of play.
