  • What size bolt to use on Max iv axel?

I need to pick up a replacement bolt for my right side drive axel on my Max. I can't fish the broken one out of the tub because it is out of reach does anyone know the size? I suppose I can guess...
I ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. I pack 20'tow-strap, 2 chains and 2 hooks,a jeep jack, and a big block of PT wood. Also an axe and chainsaw. And mechanic tools. I have a tote with a tarp and bungees. Spare parts. Two rifles. Hey, arent I supposed to be able to have three passengers?

If you are talking about the bolt that goes into the end of the axle it is a 3/8ncX1"

It is imperative that you find that lost bolt and remove it. It will find its way between a chain and sprocket and turn real ugly, and usually at the worst time.

Reminds me to find the pin that fell out of my snap on ratchet's swivel handle. The front frame tube on older argos eats anything that falls near it. Now that I think about it, I need a thin magnet, 1/8" or so..

John, I havn't received any emails from you lately, if you sent any. Just a FYI.

Thanks for the replys, fellows. I appreciate it. Just for the sake of others with the same question, I have included a photo of the bolt and it's location.

              I think that one is a 3/8 NF X 2 1/2"

That's very good advice John. I agree. That lost bolt, washer, nut etc. will find it's way into something that is turning, spinning or otherwise moving and it may cause damage far more expensive to repair than what it will cost to buy one of those telescoping probes with the swivel magnet on the end that you can buy at a good auto parts store. A magnetic probe is a staple in my tool kit that I carry along when riding.

I have an older Max with hollow axles. This same hole ate three bolts and got all wallered out. I used the hardest bolts available. So finally I drilled out a new hole on the oppisite side of the sprocket and fitted in another bolt. Rode for hours today on it with no problems.
