  • new owner of a max iv

Just bought a 1998 (or so) MAX IV from a classified add posted on here. The machine came with a set of tracks and a set of 26" tires. I rode it a bit on the tracks and then decided to try the larger tires because it is terrible in water with the tracks. The machine runs and swims much better with the tires (in my opinion). I do have some leaks, seems to leak at all the axles. Anyone have any ideas on how much the bearings cost for these? I have the splined axles. I am going to try greasing them as they dont look to have ever been greased, maybe it will help for a while. My intent is to use this machine as a fishing boat in several small ponds in the area as well as one river with more 2" water than 2' water. I will mount a trolling motor for the deeper areas but may not need it as much as I thought, as the tires really move the machine well.. One last question, any ideas on what a used set of tracks with the 21" tires to run them would be worth? They seem to me in decent condition, worked well and floated over mud great, they just bring the suck in water!

    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

The price of bearings varies greatly with brand/quality from $10 for each outer bearing to $40 or more. But for a decent quality bearing you will probably pay $15-20 each. While you are replacing them, also replace the inner bearings just to save you from doing the same labor again down the road. Be sure to check out the bearing replacement video in our how-to section and use the 3M strip caulk to get a water tight seal.

Those 26" tires on a Max IV make it one of the fastest amphibs on the water so you probably don't need that trolling motor.

Placing a value on the used tires/tracks is difficult, especially not knowing any details about them. Post up some pictures and your location...maybe you will get some offers.

I will try to get some pictures, I really dont know anything about them as far as specifics to tell you, I dont know enough about them to identify them. I am in alabama and travel for work all over the country, and drive a lot.

Congrads on the new Max purchase. I did the same and just bought myself one. Let me know how you like it.

I got a chance to try the machine out with a new 55 ft lb trolling motor and it did great, it was everything I was hoping for. I also bent a front bumper/winch mount and I am now a lot more confident using the winch. I did however find a new leak, I am leaking between the body halves, so I guess I am going to have to do some creative sealing. When my mail server comes back alive I will attach pics of the bumper.

Here are some pictures of the tracks I got on this machine. I have no use for them as they do not swim well and this machine will be used mostly in water. I assume they are factory, I do have the wheel spacers and bearing cages as well. What would be a fair price for them?track5.jpgtrack4.jpgtrack3.jpgtrack2.jpgTrack1.jpg

bumper3.jpgbumper2.jpgbumper1.jpgtrack6.jpgOne more of the tracks and tires, and then my freshly made bumper. I think it turned out nice for a basement hack job.

Pretty good looking bumper and winch mount, never seen one made of tubing bolted to the tub like that.

Thanks, I wanted some protection all the way around and doing it this way allows me to just tie it back in when I get around to the rear. I it kinda heavy but I dont think its too bad. I bolted it through the tub and through the square tubing thats below, in the same manner the factory roll cage would have been done. I may add a roll cage hoop at some time if it seem to need one. Not sure just how easy it would be to roll one of these-- especially doing what I intend to do.
