  • Split Shifter ?

Help out this rookie here. What does a split shifter actually do and tell me the pros and cons of it.

A split shifter allows you to shift each side of the T20 from forward to reverse independently which allows you to counter-rotate. There are a lot of threads on this topic if you will use the search. Here are a couple to get you started:

How to Split Shift a T20

The basic downside is added stress to the frame and drivetrain from counter-rotating.

Thanks Mike, but, I was hoping to get some of the pros and cons of a split shifter from members of this site.

I did a split shifter mod on my Max II and it makes it alot easier to get in and out of gear. Instead of having to play with your forward and reverse you can shift each side of the T-20 independently and they go in gear with ease were is if you have the one shifter sometimes you have to rock or play with the laterals to get both to shift into gear. I don't really know of any cons besides you have two levelers to shift. The Mode is really easy to do. It took me like 30 mins start to finish to do mine. But it is alot of fun to do zero turns.

I don't buy into the theory of more frame/drivetrain stress with the split shifter.....so NO cons in my opinion

The indifferent: You will rarely use it to counter-rotate because most of the time a standard tight turn works just fine.

The pro: Turning in water is made sooooo much easier. In the water there is nothing solid for the tires to grip, so turns are large sweeps. If you counter-rotate you can spin the machine in place, do a 180, and return the same way you went in.
Shifting to/from/to FWD/REV is made much easier. Instead of trying to get both sides (non syncro gears) to mesh at once, they can be done one at a time.
A quirk of the t-20 is that when shifting, you loose your braking. People have lost control on hills trying to shift and it can be very dangerous. When split, you can shift one side at a time, holding yourself in place.

And the big pro: You get to show off to the quad guys at ATV parks. I heard someone did this in the parking lot at Bundy Hill yesterday....Just be careful not to get too dizzy.
Here is mine: T-20 split shifter - YouTube The 2 levers together allow one hand to push on both at the same time.
My next project is a MaxIV and with that one I'll try to do it with foot levers. I will also use these things http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...call-part.html By themselves they make shifting easier, with the loss of "feel" from a foot lever, I think they will be necessary.

            Thanks Jim
Do you have any idea if you can buy split shifters and what kind of cost are we talking about.
            Thanks

Nobody makes them commercially, so you will have to fab it up yourself.
