  • Bearing replacement

Got the machine all apart, engine and stand is out. Chains are all off and axles are all out. Other than cleaning and lubing what else should I do while I am this far in? I intend to change the engine oil and filter, as well as the fuel filter and plugs. I am also going to be replacing some worn chain, and making one last adjustment to the trans bands. Should I change the trans fluid? Would I benefit from changing out the driven clutch spring to a red spring? I intend to also plumb in a second bilge pump just in case I ever do need it, although I hope the new bearings stop my leaks and make this ride water tight.. Is water tight asking too much?

By all means change transmission fluid. Dark with some metal is quite normal. If fluid is white or gray it has water in it. I would then open up the t20 and clean and inspect it. The water tends to stay in behind the output shaft bearings no matter how many times its changed. You will also know when to change it again. The red spring keeps the driven clutch in low longer, more low speed power. I would lift the transmission out and install RIs upgrade kit for mounting it. This upgrade takes some work and welding but the trany won't ever move and rear chain adjusters are beefed up. The install instructions for frame upgrade are on this site with max repair manuals. Good luck and new bearings should be very watertight.

Use 3m strip caulk to seal the bearings and you will be good.

Ok, I got all 6 out and the bearings off. One of the axles has had the splines machined off at the end (about an inch and a half long).. I guess now I need a different bearing for that one. Its one of the rears, the engine side if it matters. Any suggestions on what to do now? The bearing it was working on looks to match the shaft, and fits in the same way as the other 5, just a smaller ID. The locking collar is also a smaller ID.

        Thanks,
        Jason

Well, it looks like I am still a couple days out on the last bearing. I can't honestly say I would recommend "Buffalo Bearings" for anything other than price. The price is fair but they took a week to ship the first batch, and then almost a week to ship the second one. I had to call both times to get the order to ship. Either way hopefully I will get the dang thing on Wednesday and get it back together. Its amazing how much room one of these takes up when its torn apart! I had a LOT of play in the bearings, and most were very tough to roll so I think this will make a difference in the performance of the machine as well as keep the water out. On a side note, with the bearing cages I could not feel very much play but once they were all out I can move each one a LOT. I would say it would be tough to determine bearing wear with the extra outboard bearing, keep that in mind when checking by hand.

When I ordered my bearings from them they told me up front they were not in stock and it would be a week or more before they shipped. You will see a big change with new bearings One tip if you use the strip caulk is to put it in the fridge for a few hours before use, it makes it much easier to work with. Good luck.

Yeah, if they had told me an accurate timeline I wouldn't mind at all.. I am already done with the outer bearings, and yeah that strip caulk is some stretchy stuff cooling it might make that better. I used a lot on every outer bearing and what squished out I just rolled up onto the lip of the tub or the lip of the flange to help seal it all up. I dont see how water could get past that stuff its a great sealer. I will let yall know how well she does hopefully the bearing will arrive on wednesday and I will be able to use it this weekend.. We'll see!

Well, still no bearing and no tracking info possible. I have ordered the bearing elsewhere. I would not trust Buffalo Bearing as far as I can throw them. 1 for 2 with a delay on the one delivered order is not good to me. I hope anyone who does deal with them has better luck than I. Have a camping trip planned this weekend with some fishing if I can get this bearing in tomorrow and get everything else buttoned up I intend to try this max out, I will post results..

I don't know what it is with them, I have heard nothing but good about buffalo bearing and when I called was told the same thing as you, they were not in stock but would be ordered and arrive at my door by the end of the following week. Well the end of the following week is here and they haven't charged my card or sent any form of communication. Very disappointed as well
