  • modify older bushing axles to inner bearings

Is there a way to modify older bushing axles to use inner bearings ?if my axles and sprockets are rusted so bad that i have to replace them, can a 80s machine be modified to use later model components ?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Yes, they can be modified. Drill 2 holes in the frame for a 2 bolt bearing flange and you are in business.

Hey Scott, Jim's right, use the 2-bolt flanges.
        .
Get the 2-bolt flanges BEFORE taking everything apart.
        .
With the outside bearing and flange still in place,
pull the axle out far enough to get it out of the bushing,
        clean it up a bit,
put the new 2-bolt flange on the axle,
push the axle back into the old bushing,
hold the new flange against the frame,
using the correct size transfer punch for the flange mounting hole,
transfer punch thru the 2 flange holes,
        remove everything,
with a real center punch make the transfer marks deeper,
with a small drill bit drill at the center punch points,
then finish with the correct size drill bit (keep it tight).
        .
Now your new 2-bolt flange should be centered correctly.
        .
        Good luck...ed

it is a bit more of a project than the previous posts. The inner frame rails may either face inboard or outboard depending on the year, if the bearing will mount to the inside of the channel you will need to use a smller diameter bearing. you can see photos on cutting out the inboard axle pins and setting the bearing alignment with an alignment bar.

JBF think he just wants inner bearings not the new style axles.

Well after getting home yesterday, my stepson and I started to tear into the max , puller the old techumsi and engine mount , pulled the seats , cut off the 1 chain that was still on it , turns out it does have inner bearings, everything is SO rusted though , were gonna try and pull the axles soon , pull the frame and de rust it . got to pull the trans and open it up for inspection ( kinda worried what I might find ) gonna try and get the techumsi running for power in the mean time.

The old style bronze bushings were bullet proof. I've seen them on several machines that are 20+ years old and are still functional.
