  • max 11 not fast enough. ..please help

I bought my max 11 and its in great shape. 14 hp vangaurd.it only does maybe 10 mph
I installed a new belt and tightened my chains. Still same issue. How do I know if my clutch is bad?

It sounds like your belt is to loose. Had the same thing with mine .

If you can run your max with the engine cover off watch the clutches and see if the primary closes and pushes the belt to the outside.
The secondary should open as you increase speed and allow the belt to move to the inside .(high gear)
Tension of the belt is very important as to how the clutches work together.(search belt deflection)
Too loose and it will not open the secondary and have a lower top speed.
Too tight and it will want to creep at idle and shift too soon ....or not shift at all.
Here is a video to give you an idea how they work together.

My belt has like an 8th inch gap up where the main clutch is. Almost as if the belt is not wide enough

Is the only way to adjust the belt to add washers to tge engine mount bolts

The belt should sit about 1/8 inch above the driven clutch. Belt tension is important also. Sounds like you may need a new belt.

Never had a max. Just going off what i.ve read over the past few years. On my attex I slotted the holes in the engine mount so i could slide it back and forth. Give it time, people on here are great and someone with a max will chime in. Lots of problems i have read have been solved with the proper belt width and proper tention.

You adjust the belt tension by sliding the motor back away from the transmission. If you will search the site you will find some information on how to do this. There is also an article in our how-to section on replacing the motor in a Max II that will show you what is involved. Check out the second page of the article for the installation portion: How to install a motor in a Max II

A couple of things. The steel bars that your engine is mounted to should be slotted to allow you to move it forward or back to adjust the belt tension. Second, you say the engine isn't reaching full throttle? That could be throttle cable/linkage, govenor set up, carb problems etc. A while back, my Max II was slower than I thought it used to be. Turns out I had misadjusted the governor and it prevented it from reaching full rpm's. I'd start with making sure you can get full throttle.
