Here's a post im sure will raise some eyebrows.......Has anyone ever attempted or have done a diesel engine swap in a 6x6? I acquired a used kohler, 25hp diesel engine, its air cooled, turns 3 to 4000 rpms, looks like a guy could bolt on any sized stub shaft ya want. I was going to use it for a portable air compressor but now I have an idea!!!!!!!

There are a few members that have swapped their gas motors for diesels. If you will search the site you will find some threads. Don's Hustler Bigfoot is the first one that pops in my mind: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/hustl...ot-diesel.html

Here's a couple more threads from the search:

I am currently building a Gotcha using a refrigerator diesel. If it fits in the hole, give it a go!!! Unless of course it weighs too much to swim.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Awesome vids mudbug, not real sure about your spring loaded seat idea but ok. My reason for starting this post was purely for ideas on this plan.
Im looking at re doing another maxII and that would be the transplant recipient. Having said that, the max will have a bit different set up than this one, and Im a bit worried about overheating problems but the diesel is taller so im thinking I will have to cut out most of the trunk area for clearance and fabricate an engine cover as you have,
Also I saw another post that someone had put an extra 12v alternator on via belt drive and what looked to be a car battery stuffed in there too. im thinking I might need some counter ballast, alt in the back, battery in the front to run a winch and such.

ps, super glad I found a website with people who can relate. I don't think theres another 6x6 owner within 200 miles of me!! lol
I seem to be the odd man out when we go muddin cause I can go where my buddies can only sit n think about goin.

Thanks for all the input and if anyone else has anything to add or more vids, theyre sure welcome to throw em on here.

That's exactly what it is. A kubota carrier diesel. I think I got the 2 cylinder box truck version. hydromike got the bigger semi trailer unit.

Looks like this is the engine you'd like to swap in? http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinec...Number=KD625-2

Looking at the specifications, it looks pretty heavy for an air cooled twin. Regardless, I think it'd be a stone-simple swap in. Like you say, a stub shaft of almost any size could be bolted on without issue. As long as you can duct in cool air and duct out the hot air, I bet you'll be fine. Don has a Kubota (what is it, a D905?) in his Hustler 980, and it runs fine with some added in/out cooling fans. He also shoehorned in a big diesel single (not sure of the make) in his Attex Li'l Truck. I don't think that has any problems with it. I'm running the Kubota gasoline-equivalents in a few machines (yeah, I know they tend to run cooler), but I think proof-of-concept is still there.

Here are a couple shots of the Kubota V1505 that Drew was talking about. I have the luxury of a ton of space in this project, so the four cylinder fits in there with acres to spare.

I was shocked to see that the dry weight of the 25hp Kohler and the 36hp Kubota were within 0.1 lbs of one another. I'm going to guess that the radiator, hoses and coolant will add about 40 more pounds or so to my Kubota's running weight. Man, these things weigh up fast!

Yup I think that's the one, mine is way older (and its silver maybe a repaint) but the mounts look the same and such. Ive noticed that all your machines are a bit bigger than my little maxII, ie closer to the maxIV size. Im not to familiar with the other brands, all ive owned is max. ive seen a couple argos but never owned one. BUT heres the kicker, iowa law states I have to register as an atv OR boat, I cant do both. All of my atvs and aatv are registered as an atv so water isn't really an issue unless im fishing in my private pond so I guess my project doesn't really havta float in more than a foot or so of water (addressing the weight issue).

The little Kubota refer diesel is a great candidate for the machine in question. Its a perfect match for torque, economy and downright coolness. I think this engine can be shoe horned in a Max2, I've studied it for years, and know it can be done, its just hard for me to pull a perfectly good gas engine out and replace it with a diesel when both my Max2s run so well. Maybe someday I'll bite off and do the transplant.
The Winsun equipped Super Swamp Fox made an excellent off roader.

I agree that my max runs excellent but you bet ur bottom dollar im gunna be hunting for a good candidate for this project. I may just have a line on a small turbo that came off a foreign lawn mower, havta see what the deal is with that.

tell me that wouldn't be the coolest thing ever 25hp diesel with about a 15mm turbo just rollin smoke through the mud. Man I got a lot of time on my hands when its a flood year lol.

Here is a link to look at. A small turbo developed for 2 cylinder diesels. 2-Cylinder Diesel Engine Gets Turbo Upgrade | Honeywell Turbo Technologies
I have the Kohler KDW 702 17hp liquid cooled diesel in my 2008 arctic cat 700 4 wheeler. A diesel mechanic on arcticchat.com has now made a turbo kit for it and tested it on the Kohler KDW 702 jumping it up from 17hp to about 40 or 42hp Finally picked up my 700 Diesel. Mod time! - ArcticChat.com - Arctic Cat Forum. I tweaked my KDW 702 and have it producing around 25hp just by advancing the fuel delivery timing and the and I'm now looking to buy that turbo kit. ANyway my point is that a guy could buy the Kohler KDW 702 and add that turbo kit to obtain about 40hp plus tweak the fuel delivery for some extra black smoke. Just a thought.
