I have been in the process of restoring my 2000 MAX IV and have spent many hours taking it apart. I am replacing the chains and bearing at this time and my back in on fire from bending over. I'm going to have a Beer this morning! I am going to remove every part on this unit and clean it up to new condition. So far penetrate is my best friend. Many of the axle parts had rust on them. Its looking much better every day. When I complete the mechanical side of the restoration I will begin on the custom modifications. I am going to make and install a full roll cage and winch bumper, move the front seat back and add foam, relocate the battery with a automotive one next to the engine, make a fold down rear seat with storage, rear rack, windshield, gps mount, bikini top, and LED lights, and, gun racks.

I work on these all the time and had lower back surgery last year. I now prop my automotive creaper on a short ladder and lay on it when my back gets tired. was the only way to work for a few months. Check with Jay at RI for the 2008 and up front ears for the transmission. they weld in and make it stay put. have a good day and remember a complete restoration is more than a one beer job.

Just use a quality battery that fits, the automotive battery sounds good, but your charging system will only charge so much,if you run your automotive battery down it will take forever for it to charge itself.Unless you upgrade the charging system I dont recommend it.Plus I dont want to add anymore weight to my machine than is necessary.

Yes I would not go bigger on the battery like eddieb1965 says. I have put an alternator on my old Max IV and it works great and not much more weight than a bigger auto battery plus your always charged. I will install an alternator on my newer Max IV soon and will take a few pics to post on here. I will install a 40 amp 1 wire denso alternator. I think it only weighs 5.5 lbs, then there is a little weight in the mounting bracket, engine stub shaft, stub shaft pulley and the tie rod I use to adjust tension. So probably nore more than 7.5 lbs additional weight. A bigger auto battery will weigh at least that much extra and probably more. Also very little horse power will be lost running a stub shaft and alternator, maybe a 1/2 hp. At least your battery will always be charged. Good luck
