  • Max IV bearing help

    Hi All,

I am doing a bearing replacement on my '97 Max IV. Axles 1 and 2 are the original cross bolt axle type and axle 3 has been updated to a newer style splined axle that uses outer lock collars, snap rings on the sprocket, set screws on the inner bearings and a bolt on the inboard end of the axle. I have removed all the axles, what I need to know is what part numbers to order when I contact one of the bearing supply houses. Does anybody know off-hand the part numbers for the outer bearings ( for cross bolt and splined axles) and the part numbers for the inner bearings for the splined axle ? Also any recommendations on what bearing manufacturer to use, who makes the better quality bearings ? Also, I read to use 3M strip caulk when sealing the outer bearing retainers to the tub. Where do you purchase 3M strip caulk ? Also do you use the paper gaskets between the bearing retainer halves or just use RTV ? Typically how much grease do you pump into your bearings ? Thanks for any help you can provide with my bearing replacement.

You can find a lot of information (more than we could post in a single response) on the questions you are asking if you will use the search:

For the bearing part number try this post: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...tml#post142987

If I were you I would pull the rear bearings out and get a number off of them since you don't know exactly what axles are in the back of your machine. For the brand of bearing, regardless of which bearing you decide on, be sure to get a triple sealed bearing for the outer bearings. Try these threads for more on brands:

For the strip caulk, you can find that at your local autoparts store

The Max II bearing replacement article will be a good resource for you for everything else: How to replace your 6x6 Bearings

        Mike,

Thanks for the links. I have a '97 Max IV, so it appears that I have the "newer" style 72 mm bearings ( I will double check w/ Jay @ RI). From what I gather then, that the 72mm outer bearings are the same for either cross bolt or splined axles ? And that Max II and Max IV (72 mm bearing) use the same outer bearing ? I will check the numbers on the original inner bearings to make sure of what I have presently. Since I have the bearings all out right now, what do you guys think about adding outer bearing extensions ? Are they worth the effort and expense on a Max IV ? Reason that I was considering the extensions is that I would like to try the new MuddOx Vendetta tires, but to do that I will need to put on 1 inch wheel spacers to get the tires a bit away from the tub. Any thoughts ?
        thanks,

        Pete
