  • Max IV torn down, need put back together advice.

OK The max IV is completely torn down, here is what I found.
Tires: seem to be newer with good tread, Goodyear 21”.
Tub: good shape no big gouges, just small scratches.
Upper body: Showing signs of age but still very functional.
Frame: Must have rotted in the past. Heavy channel has been welded in for the outside rails.
Axles: All the bolt holes are worn, but they are all straight.
Sprockets: Again worn, the right side drive sprocket is actually bent and cannot be used.
Bearings: Seem to be newer, probably needs replaced as well.
Transmission: Goes in forward and reverse, but shifting is VERY sloppy.
Engine: Rockwell 295, runs good, but all I can say is no power.

There are still other things that need to be fixed, but I don’t want to write a book (yet).
My main concern is the axles and sprockets, they will all have to be fixed or replaced. I need some input as to what path I should take. Replace everything with new splined axles and sprockets (expense), try to find all the parts used (may end up with close to what I have), or try making some of the parts myself (not too knowledgeable on 6X6s). Any thoughts would be appreciated.
My final plan for this machine would be at leased 23 hp engine and I want to put tracks on it if I can. So any prep work to that end is also needed.

Talked to RI, after recovering from the sticker shock they told me I should have the axles welded up then redrilled. If I can have this done then the thick washers made for fixing worn out holes on sprockets might work. Does that sound right?

Sounds right. You could always make new old style axles. It's just a couple holes in some round stock. Any place with a lathe should be able to turn your old hubs off and reweld them on the new axles for you.

I hope this doesn't post twice, I thought the same thing, but is there anywhere to get new hubs cheap, or is there a substitute part with the same bolt pattern (all new would be better), and if I plan on tracks could I make the new axles longer so the tracks, if homemade do not rub the tub? I know I'll need bearing extensions / cages if I can make them longer.

I'm thinking I'll wind up making my axles. Right now I'm leaning toward an inch longer. I plan to hit the scrap metal place for aluminum for bearing extensions tomorrow during lunch. If they've got it, the aluminum will be a lot cheaper than the $60 a foot that I saw for plastic stock on Ebay.

Just finished talking to Weld Tech here in Raleigh, He wants $150.00 per hub to turn out the old axle and weld in a new one. Does this price seem high to ya'll? RI quoted me $160.00 on the new splined axles, but with them I would have to have new sprockets also.

              Seems pretty steep to me.
