  • is the gearing the same for max 2 and max4

Just wondering if max 2 uses the same set up in drive gears as a max 4

They are very different. A t-20 has output sprockets with 15 teeth. Your MaxII should have mating sprockets on the jackshaft with 27 teeth. A MaxIV has sprockets with 34 teeth, but usually has 26" tires too. The gear reduction is easy to figure out, but the tire variable gets a little sketchy. MaxII's came with 21 or 22" tires. MaxIV's could have 21, 22, 25, or 26" tires, but I think 26" was the most common.

Can you use max four sprockets in a max 2

The easiest way to re-gear your Max II is to change the hearing in the jack shaft. This is cheap and easy if you can or know a machinist that can put it on a lathe and turn off your old sprockets and weld new ones on. You could even make new ones with the same size tube and new sprockets.

I run a max II with 34 tooth jackshaft sprockets. There is also gear reduction from jackshaft to axle so my total is lower than a IV. The IV also runs a larger axle sprocket (26) teeth that won't fit into a II and clear the tub. I've made jackshafts for the II with sprockets as large as 37 teeth but clearance issues start above 34.

            hi ,
after contacting RI about gearing for my ssf .I was informed of the max 4 having lower gearing [less top speed and more bottom end ] than the max 2 . It was suggested that I use a 34 tooth axle sprocket .
The interesting part is the gearing is not changed if the tire size is changed .

** remember that low speed & top speed is also influenced by the diameter of the secondary clutch
eg comet 770 lowest 1st gear but the lowest top speed
            then following the 780,790
            Max use the 780
If using a 770 use a 32 tooth sprocket to achieve similar results to 34t/780

Thanks for the info - I will see about obtaining some new sprockets and clutch to make the changes. I looking for crawling power and not so much on the speed, I am running 22" run a muck tires now and they seam to pull good. Getting to old to go fast, racing days are over
