Im having issues with my belt squealing when I try to turn sharp in reverse. Its a new belt and the tension seems right. Its a Max IV with a 18horse vanguard. I know my drive clutch is not functioning properly. Im about to replace it. Was just wondering if that could be it.

I'm having the same problem with the belt making a squealing noise when I pull on the left lever in reverse. My Max II is a 98 I believe; how would I determine if my clutch is operating properly? If it is the clutch where would I order one and how much do they cost? Would it be possible that the clutch is making the noise instead of the belt?

With the machine in neutral, rev the engine and watch both of the clutches. As the engine revs higher, the clutch on the engine will close, allowing the belt to climb up the face(s) of the clutch. At the same time, the clutch on the transmission will open, allowing the belt to go down into the clutch further. The video below will give you a better visual representation than I can describe here. If you search the site, you can find some threads on adjusting your belt for the proper tension. If your belt is squealing, I would start there.
