  • Left side wheels not pulling when climbing?

Can anyone give me a direction to start in? My 2004 MAX IV has been doing great, I just tightened the chains to 3/4 inch slack and all of a sudden my left side tires are not pulling when I go up an incline, could I have done something wrong when I tightened the chains? Help please

Hmm, interesting that adjusting the chains and pulling power loss occurred at the same time. It's probably just a coincidence though. Being a 2004 you have splined axles and square headlights correct? An old pinned axle could have sheared a bolt, but it's impossible with splined. My guess is it's just time to adjust the bands a hair.

Start with something simple; make sure you are pushing forward on the laterals hard when trying to go up the incline. Don't rely solely on the springs to hold the laterals forward.

Sorry to get back to you so late guys, had to go to hospital and get a nerve block.

A.Drew, yes it does have the splined axles and square headlights.
Mike, I also was trying to push the laterals all the forward but to no avail, I did smell a funny burnt type smell (like clutch in a car or something), I checked the belt and it seemed to be fine. Could I have pushed the transmission to hard trying to climb out of a pond bank?

A.Drew, when you say tighten the bands a bit that sounds scary, what does that entail?
        Thanks for reply guys!

Look around on this page and read the info. I believe there should be something describing how to adjust the bands.

To adjust your bands, check the last page of the T20 How-To article in our how-to section here: Rebuild your T20 Transmission - Final Assembly

There are also several posts in the transmission forum on this same topic if you need additional help. I would adjust them as Drew recommended and see if that fixes the problem. You shouldn't worry about damaging the T20 by climbing out of a pond bank or anything else for that matter. It can hold up to a lot of abuse.

            Edit: Drew beat me

                Mike,
After doing a little research I'm thinking it could possibly be the continuously variable drive belt system, is there any articles or literature about how to work on(change or tighten) these belts? Thanks again.

I doubt your problem is the belt. Belt issues are usually squealing, lack of engine power, etc. The t-20 is actually 2 transmissions in one case, with each side operating independently of the other. If you have trouble with one side, but not the other, it cannot be the belt.

FYI: Here is some info on belt tension ATV and Snowmobile Belts - by Dayco
On a MaxIV, the engine must be raised to tighten the belt. Use shims between the motor base and the stand.

Is there fluid in the trans?

                    Joe.

I ended up changing the trans fluid and there was plenty of fluid in it, it seems to be doing a lot better now but how would I know for sure if I need to adjust the bands or rebuild the trans? Any ideas?
                      Thanks much.

Just adjust the bands. If that helps, that was your problem. If it doesn't make any improvements, I would take it apart and check the bands to see if they are worn or missing the lining in any areas.
