  • axle issue

Last week the middle axle shifted out 1 inch which threw the sprocket off an inch as well and snapping the main drive chain. seeing as we still had to get it out of the tundra and on the trailer I took it all apart and had to beat it back in to get it back together, looking at it in depth now I notice that there are eccentric locking collars on every axle but only on the outside, this is an early 70's machine with no inner bearing. My ? is the flange all that is keeping the axle from sliding out? I can see the eccentric collar keeping it from inward movement but not outward, I notice the same issue starting on the other side center axle as well. Any info? also compared to the other tub I use for my meat wagon this one has a long steel channel running outside the tub from the center to the front axle with some sort of pivoting steel rod at the bottom, looks like a factory mount for a plow but not sure any ideas?

On single bearinged axled Max's the one eccentric collar is all that is holding the axle from walking, if your axle has walked the eccentric has probably broken ( only takes a 1/8 x1/2 chunk missing from the bearing side to make it useless) and though you have driven it back in it's probably not doing much unless the collar has just loosened up.
If you have the means to add the inner bearings they would help quite a bit, people are also adding split locking collars inside of the bearings to aid in keeping the axle from walking.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

      Hey Scotty,
The eccentric locking collar locks on the axle and keeps of from sliding both ways. If its tight it should work.

don't really see how it keeps it from sliding both ways larry but I guess the next ? is how much space should be between the axle and the frame there they meet or distance from the outside flange and back of the hub? the front axles have about 1/16 space where they meet the inside frame and the centers are 1/2 and 5/8 space and the main drive sprocket attachment floats 1/4 inch ea way on the attachment above the axle.

Here's the hard part: Every machine is slightly different. The outer bearing IS the only thing that holds your axle in place, and it is NOT enough as you just found out.
I always add a spacer between the outer bearing and the sprocket tube (1 1/2" pvc pipe works well), then add a 2pc split collar to the inside of your sprocket tube.
You could also add a spacer to the inside of that collar to keep the axle from moving inward, but it really isn't needed because the outer bearing lock collar does that already.
The size of the spacer will vary on each machine, and even on each axle......and change if the bearing is replaced w/ a different brand. Align your chains, then you can measure each axle space to find the size spacers you will need.

You are correct on this also. That is the older style plow mount. Plow would go over them two pivots with a hitch pin through them pivots and work off either a pulley system in the front with a foot pedal on the inside of the machine to raise and lower plow or just use a winch to lift it.

Might take me a few days with my goofy work schedule but I should be able to come up with some pictures for you.
