  • Max II engine swap body modification

im new to the whole 6x6 world. im working on restoring a 1985 max II and when I got my new toy the previous owner gave me a 18 hp vanguard engine to upgrade from the running Tecumseh oh160 engine. the swap is easy for me to accomplish but my question is does the upper body need to be modified as well like cut out for the motor?
any reply from the guys that have tried this would be helpful

In approx. 1990 Recreatives started using the Briggs v-twins. They continued to use the same tops, just with a different engine cover. Yours should have a small cover with a large bulge to fit the OHV pod of the Tecumseh. The 1990+ tops had a larger cut out to clear the air cleaner of the Briggs and give access to the dipstick. If I'm not mistaken, The air cleaner did not stick through the hole. You should be able to fit the new motor under that top, without cutting it larger if you didn't want to.

Here is a picture with the 1990+ style engine cover.[IMG][/IMG]

yes. I do not want to cut the top up. I like the idea of having that space for utility besids that not having a huge hole there will protect my drivetrain from the elements. my next question is it possible to buy the new style cover and apply it to the older body?

It's funny you ask that. You could buy an entire new upper from Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 It's probably cheaper than you would expect as they are having a factory relocation sale! You can call up there for a quote during the week or just show up an buy one. They will be open 10-2 on Saturday November 23rd just for the sale. A bunch of us are meeting up there to hang out. You could get a new upper or just a new engine cover and pick the brains of some very knowledgable people.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

You will need to cut the upper to put a Vanguard in if it now has the small tec. hole, the new engine cover follows the raised line currently running up the center and around the front and rear edges of the upper. Look at pictures in the max gallery for the large square hood on 90's model 2's.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
          Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.
