  • Looking at stepping away from 4 wheels....

    Good evening folks!!

Been lurking for a while and finally decided to join up.

After having had nothing but 4 wheelers over the years and splitting my time deer hunting and duck hunting my daughter made the decision for us that last year would be it for deer.

    Nothing but ducks now

I hunt a combo of marsh, harvested rice and fallow flooded fields down here in SE Texas and the ol Polaris is taking a beating.....so I'm moving in another direction.

Been looking at all the AATV's out there and really like the Max IV

No way I can swing a new one so I was wondering if you folks could lead me in the right direction for which year model and motor set up I should be looking for considering the terrain I will be running in.

Also...tracks...no tracks. If nothing else, they look tough as hell with tracks.

    Fire away people!!

I would stick to a unit with splined axles. They began this option in 1999 and it was a standard feature around 2001. If you can find one set up for tracks, that would probably be your best bet. Tracks would be helpful down there from the sounds of it. The track kit includes bearing extensions, but I would suggest adair tracks as opposed to the factory rubber tracks as the rubber is more of a snow track. Good luck on your search. My Max IV is one of my favorite toys and has proven itself very very capable.

Rectangle head lights is a pretty good visual for 1999-2000 time frame (as seen in
in advertisement pics). Splined axles can't be seen unless you remove
the floor boards. I'm told one can expect to pay two thousand dollars just
      to update to splined axles.
Engine over eighteen hp is best. Red spring clutch as well.

Rectangle headlights were a 2000-2001 change. The splined axles were options in 99 but came on round headlight machines. So you can have the upgraded axle with either body style. As for just looking for the headlights, replacement uppers are not hard to come by. It is very possible that someone would swap on a newer style upper to give the machine a face lift and still have pinned axles. Asking for pictures of the drivetrain and a serial number are usually my first questions. You can call RI to run the number or just check it against the Max serial number thread here on the site. You can really narrow down what year the machine actually is using that thread.

Thank you for adding info. It clears up a bit of misinformation I might have
insinuated. Its good to learn these things.
