How many grease points on a Max IV? I just want to make sure I get them all.

mine just has them on the outside axle bearings next to the tub, one per wheel. have to take the wheels off to do them. wish it had some on the inner bushings.

I've yet to see a maxIV with inner bushings.....Maybe a very early one Larry? Newtwo6x6: You should have bearings on the inside end of each axle to grease also.
Early MaxII's had the inner bushings with no way to grease them, unless you add your own zerk to the axle. The hollow axles made this very easy.

Nothing to do with 6x6s but this reminds me of a funny zerk story, and how many of those are there?

A friend of mine got some part time work for a local farmer after school when he was a teenager. First day on the job the old guy tells him that he needs to grease some piece of equipment and that there are 13 places to that need grease under it and that my friend is to hit each of them with a shot of grease and not to emerge from under the machine until the job is done and not to bother him with dumb questions and just do the work.

So two hours later my friend finally gets the nerve to get out from under the machine and find the farmer and admit that he only found 12 zerks after looking all over the machine. The farmer says "I knew that, I just wanted you to take your time and get a good look at the machine."

Opps, sorry guys. I don't know where my brain went, it does have bearings on the inside with no zerks. I need to proofread my posts before I hit the "reply" button!

I was able to find 12 grease fittings (zerks), two each per axle. One on the outside of the tub at the top of each outer bearing. One at the inner end of each axle on the inner bearing. Only problem is I could not get on the left rear inner bearing grease zerk. Even with a 90 degree adapter, just not enough space between bearing and inner axle gear.

No, I don't think so, as it doesn't look like I could get a straight shot at the zerk fitting. I'm looking at a different 90 degree tool. Will call company that sells them tomorrow as today is a holiday and it seems they don't do online orders. I placed another post, with another problem, the Idler Plates are bowed on that side, but don't think it keep me from getting on the zerk. Happy Thanksgiving to all in the 6x6World.

An up date on the number of grease points on a 1999 MAX IV, I found two more grease point while adjusting chains. These grease points are located on the rear axles between the primary chain sprocket and the rear final drive chain sprockets. So that 14 grease points, MAX IV. Please, grease your MAX. Oh, still trying to get the left rear inner bearing.

I use a Lincoln # 5883 90 degree fitting on a 1/8 inch pipe nipple 6" long works great. Check your center and front sprockets for zerks. If the sprockets have snap rings on inner and outer side there will be a zerk in the middle. 1999 probably has setscrew axles in the front and center. No zerks on that type. A new MAX IV has 18 zerks. Buff truck and II have 20.

Thanks msafi65, I'm going to clean my chains and sprockets today. I do have snap rings, I will look at the front and center axles. And also for the grease adapter.

Does that mean that the newer splined axles w/snap rings (as opposed to the older set screw type) have a zerk added to the sprocket hub?
I wish I would have thought of that when I had mine apart....I could have saved half a jar of anti-seize, and the associated mess. That crap gets on everything.

Yes all the snap ring sprockets are greaseable. They are grooved internally at the zerk so all the splines lube well. I've seen very little wear on splines on vehicles that have been greased regularly.

I looked today while cleaning chain in Max IV, I couldn't fine any zerk fitting between sprockets on the front and center axles, only on the rears.
